One of the big issues highlighted during the course of the Ports of Auckland dispute (which, by the way, is ongoing) was the ability of a few ideologically driven board members and managers to act in bad faith and pursue tactics that were incredibly damaging to the public purse.
One of the reasons they were able to do this was the fact they are unaccountable via the Official Information Act. Put simple they could do what ever they wanted with public money but without any chance of public scrutiny.
At the time Labour MP, Darien Fenton, put a members bill into the ballot to fix this ridiculous situation. That bill has now been drawn.
This will be an interesting test for National as I think they’ll struggle to reject legislation that is as obviously sensible as this bill.

It’s excellent to see Fenton picking up ideas and concerns from the wider community – let’s hope a few of the other MPs take a lesson from her.
