Remedy for Global Instability: Public Lecture by Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Dr Helen Caldicott
Visiting international peace activist, author and physician Dr. Helen Caldicott says the election of Donald Trump means New Zealand’s role as a non-nuclear state is of vital importance.
“New Zealand now has a unique opportunity to revise its foreign policy and military spending,” says Dr Caldicott, Nobel Peace Prize nominee and founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility.
The New Zealand Peace Foundation – Te Tuapapa Rongomau o Aotearoa is hosting Dr Helen Caldicott to speak in Wellington and Auckland during a ‘Week of Peace’ coordinated by Auckland Peace Action.
Dr Caldicott says it is well acknowledged that the risk of nuclear warfare is higher now than at the height of the cold war, and the public are totally unaware. However, she says New Zealand is a model for the rest of the world, with its courageous anti-nuclear stance and commitment to chart a way forward that honours both parties to the Treaty of Waitangi.
When Dr Caldicott led a public education campaign and first spoke in New Zealand in the 1980s, she galvanised the growing nuclear free movement here which culminated in the passage of the cornerstone of New Zealand’s foreign policy, the nuclear-free legislation that was the first in the world. She received the Humanist of the Year award from the American Humanist Association the same year.
Dr Caldicott, a retired paediatrician, now practises “global preventative medicine.” She has devoted the last forty-five years to an international campaign to educate the public about the medical hazards of the nuclear age and the necessary changes in human behaviour to stop environmental destruction.
She will speak on “An End to Armed Conflict: New Zealand’s Unique Challenge” in Wellington tomorrow evening (Sunday 14 November, at 7:00pm) and in Auckland next week (Tuesday 16 November, at 7:30pm).
In Wellington, the event is co-sponsored by the United Nations Association of New Zealand (UNANZ). She will propose how New Zealanders can end armed conflict and avoid imminent world war.
In Auckland, Helen will speak on Tuesday 15 November, the eve of the weapons conference, as well as the next day at the ‘Blockade the Arms Trade’ action at 9:00am, on Wednesday 16 November, at Silo Park.

I actually think Aotearoa/ NZ is disadvantaged in some ways, consciousness-wise, through our very isolation and illusion of safety, – these days anyway. Those Americans or anyone else coming here to “escape” – there is NO escape from a nuclear war, just as there is NO escape from the effects of climate change. It’s adieu for everyone. Here, there is a mistaken sense that somehow we’re safe, and so the sense of urgency is diminished.

Civilisations come and go. Maybe our time is up.
Evidence of past great civilisations are all around us, above and below the earth, and below the oceans. They rarely get adequate media coverage. But this time, the ‘powers that be’ are destroying all life on earth as well.
I believe, with every fibre of my being, that if women rather than men had been given custodianship of the planet, had been given the authority, the voice, the command, the leadership that was needed, – much earlier than now, – then we would not be in this situation. We would not be on the brink of destruction, in these earlier stages of the inevitable.
I had hoped that the change would come in time to at least ameliorate some of the effects. This has not happened.
Empress Catherine ruled Russia while it vastly extended its imperial power, similar to Britain and its Queen-Empress Victoria. imperialist throwback M Thatcher went to war with Argentina. Women fronting the imposition of European power over large areas of the planet, with the destructive effect you mention.
They were still working within a male designed framework, and almost certainly taking main advice from their male military generals and a probably largely male court or government.
It’s the framework itself that needs to be changed, if we are to have peace on this planet.
