Something about foxes and henhouses…

So anyway, John Armstong’s just won this press award and the Herald’s had a bit of a boast. Which is all good and fine and I’m sure we’re all very happy for him.

Turns out the judge is “ex newspaper editor” Richard Long. The funny thing is the Herald omits a more recent item on Long’s CV – adviser to Don Brash. And what did he advise?

On the morning of the strategy meeting, chief of staff Richard Long had sent an email to Don Brash, Gerry Brownlee and other senior MPs: ‘It might pay the caucus to know that the Brethren advertising campaign to repair defence links (bring back the ships) will start this Friday’. Long said the Brethren had ‘agreed today to publicly take ownership of the campaign, to avoid conspiracy theories and to prevent the finger being pointed at us’.

Which adds a certain piquancy to Armstrong’s comments on recieving the award:

I will come down hard on any politician found interfering with or rorting the democratic process and its various institutions.

You couldn’t make this shit up.
