Spare a thought for poor Nick Mowbray.
He is one of the wealthiest people in the country, having made his money by selling toys manufactured in China and sold throughout the world for obviously more than what they are worth.
Like too many wealthy people he has chosen to broadcast his recons on politics.
He hates bureaucracy, believes that David Seymour runs intellectual rings around media and is the only person willing to have a contest of ideas and constructive debate to drive positive change, wants New Zealand to be governed like a company, and thinks that free school lunches are pathetic.
He also thinks Doge is a great idea and that the Federal Budget should be slashed. He gives the impression of being an Elon Musk fanboy.
In fact his twitter feed makes him look like a cheerleader for the right. Why is it that so often people who have become obscenely rich through free market capitalism think that all we need is even more free market capitalism?
He also gave $250,000 to the National Party. And he has retweeted with approval Tommy Robinson tweets. Yes that Tommy Robinson. And to cap things off he has also retweeted an Alex Jones tweet supporting Tommy Robinson. That is quite the trifecta.
He also chose to attack David Farrier for pointing this out in this excellent blog post and called him Desperate Dave.
Farrier said this:
Nick is unstoppably rich — that will never change — but we can at least stop pretending he’s someone we should celebrate and admire.
And to add to that we should not uncritically accept his judgment just because he is rich.
His privilege is threatened by Donald Trump’s Tariff announcement. Mowbray has accurately said “tariff wars miss the point” and “penalising trade doesn’t bring jobs back – it just raises prices and slows innovation”.
Although he is right this is not insightful commentary. It is just what everyone else has been saying for some time.
It must be difficult being really rich. Wanting more and more capitalism but not quite that much. And celebrating the right while ignoring their authoritarian tendencies.
Mowbray thinks that the tariffs will cost Zuru $3 billion a year.
Maybe next time he will be more careful about who he supports and who he promotes.
"Cry me a river," as Craig Renney has been known to say.
Mowbray exemplifies the dichotomy so prevalent these days (and perhaps always) – that riches = wisdom!
With Elon Musk I rest my case!
Turns out making toys using Chinese slave labour doesn’t make you an infinitely wise philosopher-king.
Who’d have thunk it?
You will be on his list now Res.
shrug I can think of worse fates than being on some spoilt billionaire's shit list.
Wealthy businessmen getting an unpleasant suprise as the man they were cheerleaders for does exactly what he said he was going to do and trashes their shareholder value in the process is possibly the best evidence that wealth acquisition is more a matter of luck than wisdom.
My response? "Diddums".
Part of that Waiheke Island ultra-elite Hawkesby circle.
They took the risk clinging to Trumpism so, KARMA.
This ultra-elite circle have had their best champion in the facile amblings of Luxon and he will be gone inside 18 months.
We need more businesspeople who are really prepared to work with our land and our people. Hong Kong or Singapore might be more suited to their views.
Luxon may go, by Seymour and his ilk, unfortunately, will still be there generating further discontent with democracy and equity.
Just being a filthy rich opportunistic parasite is not enough for Mr Mowbray it seems-he went the extra distance to fan boy of fascist Yaxley Lennon.
Trump’s Tariffs are a fitting reward for him.
Purveyor of cheap plastic shit (opinions)
His toys aren't great either
