The Auckland Governance Committee has called for submissions on the Local Government (Auckland Council) Bill. Two copies, by Friday, 26 June 2009, to:

The bill contains the details of the government’s Auckland Supercity, including its plans for at-large election, no Maori seats and powerless community boards. Submitting on it is vital if we want those things to change.

Making a submission is as easy as writing a letter saying that you support or oppose the bill and stating the reasons why. If you need help, the Office of the Clerk has a handy guide here [PDF].

We need a lot of submissions from every angle and from as many people as possible. Preferably all requesting an oral submission.

The government wants all ‘consultation’ to be with this select committee. Let us assist in multitudes. It may look like it is simply going to be another whitewash masquerading as democratic participation. However it appears to be the only chance you will have to express your views before it becomes law.

Pass this message to Aucklanders who you think should write a submission. If you’re outside Auckland, write on how it would affect you, and probably why this type of rushed, uncosted and incoherent reorganization should be avoided.
