Summer break

Standardista authors are on summer break! There will be an Open Mike each day, but little or no other posting (unless an author feels particularly inspired). We’ll pick up again gradually in January some time. But just in case you haven’t had enough of politics for the year, here’s some summer reading suggestions…

Something to ponder from UK politics – any of it sound familiar?

The great Tory power grab: how they plan to rule for ever

And a wee overview of NZ:

How bizarre: Is New Zealand becoming the Absurdistan of the South Pacific?

Bryce Edwards finished the year on strong form. Check out the many many links in these two pieces:

Political roundup: The struggle for integrity

Political Roundup: Dirty Politics won’t die

Also well worth following up:

Political roundup: The political problems of wealth and inequality

Stuff ran an important special investigation this year, and we should not let ourselves forget it:

Special investigation: New Zealand’™s shameful record of child abuse

For something a little lighter try:

John Key’s most cringeworthy moments

Another big theme this year was revelations relating to spying, see David Fisher’s:

Just how bad were our spies?

This was also the year that the quality of news, particularly television news, took a real dive. See for example:

Lawyers Called in as the 3D Investigative Team Resists Shutdown Plan

A TV Current Affairs Warhorse Describes The State Of It All

and a couple of retrospectives by David Fisher:

My history with Cameron Slater

The OIA arms race

The state of the media is an international problem:

The Telegraph scandal

For the truly addicted, over at The Paepae, Peter Aranyi got an OIA dump on documents relating to the Chisholm enquiry:

The Judith Collins Chisholm inquiry: Who was actually on trial?

What the Chisholm inquiry revealed about managing the media narrative

[Source documents] Judith Collins Lester Chisholm Inquiry evidence

‘Taking one for the team’ (The tl;dr version of Slater Jnr at the Chisholm inquiry)

There is so much great reading at:

Gordon Campbell’s Werewolf

Evening Report

The Spinoff

Pundit

Kiwipolitico

Hot Topic

And speaking of hot topics, see New Scientist’s:

The climate fact no one will admit: 2 °C warming is inevitable

with categories of posts on climate change and the Paris COP21 summit.

By all means add your own suggestions in comments!

Have a great break everyone. We’ll see you renewed and refreshed in the new year…
