In politics, one week is a long time.

And for this year, the week on either side of Queen’s birthday weekend was especially interesting. And particularly hectic for some key people!

Mickysavage has raised the point that both the events relating to the Prime Minister John Key demanding Minister Peter Dunne’s resignation, and the Speaker David Carter offering Dunne a lifeline, look really shonky and need to be looked at simultaneously: /open-mike-09062013/#comment-645778

It was almost exactly a week (well, short of nine minutes) from the time of the Electoral Commission’s announcement of United Future’s deregistration (initiated by the request from the UF party president) to the statement given by Peter Dunne following his resignation as Minister.

Do you agree that given the events that unfolded during that time, the speed and nature of decisions taken smacked of businesslike ruthlessness and bankster efficiency?

A skeletal timeline has been constructed below for readers to peruse, offer their comments and contribute other publicly available information and links.

It’s a shame no-one got in a “Does he have confidence in all of his ministers?” on Thursday afternoon.

    • Alanz 1.1

Quite amazing what would have already been known and decided by the PM and on the Government frontbench during Question Time on Tuesday and Wednesday, and in hindsight, when Winston raised questions at Select Committee.

  2. Alanz 2

A minor editorial point in the commentary which should have read:

“It was nine minutes short of exactly a week”

rather than “It was almost exactly a week (well, short of nine minutes)”.

  3. bad12 3

Winston must either be getting His information from within the National Party hierarchy,(if so this would be from the press secretary in the PM’s office who is said in the Henry report to have seen the ‘leaked document’ and also had contact with the DomPost’s Vance in the relevant time frame,

    Or,

The Dompost is feeding Winston the information so as to create maximum heat for the story and ensure it’s longevity,(sells more newspapers),

Either way this is all pretty machiavellian and should it transpire that National have been leaking the juicy details of Dunne’s little dalliance, (puppy love), with the DomPost’s Vance then it starts to smell of a deal on coalition being stitched together between National and NZFirst this far out from the 2014 election,

This far out from November 2014 it is hard to tell the level of support for NZFirst, (mid 4% is my pick based upon the level of noise made by Winston in the past month), those of us from the left who were advocating NZFirst voters stick with their party in 2011 will definitely be advocating the opposite as we head for November 2014…

    Bad12
    >The Dompost is feeding Winston
So where is the Dompost getting the info??

    • bad12 4.1

Lolz, that would depend on whether or not ‘the Hairdos’ denial of having leaked the information to Vance from the DomPost is to be believed,

Lets say for arguments sake He didn’t, (a position i don’t really support), we could debate that one of the press secretary’s in Slippery’s office seeing the slide taking place in National’s internal polling, (as opposed to the mainstream media polls one of which the Herald’s Armstrong admits has been skewing it’s results), has opted for job security over political loyalty and leaked the report to the DomPost’s Vance on the understanding of gaining future employment with that rag…

    • Alanz 4.2

(For the record, I do not now (hehe) work for any media and definitely not The Dompost.)

I will share an observation that the Dompost would not likely be feeding Winston or anyone at all with any info. It is not the role of media to do that but to be there for people to provide or drop off info. And they would run the story, after assessing potential legal issues and the public interest at stake. The Dompost people would behave with integrity.

As well, there is very likely to be nothing in it for Andrea Vance to be involved any further. The information was provided to her, she ran the story, end of story. She would likely to have already moved on to something else, another story, etc.

Have fun, y’all. I am off to the office and cannot post anything more because my Minister Crusher will be monitoring my work (joking!). Back in the evening, with perhaps some more info (info already on the public record).

      • ianmac 4.2.1

Andrea Vance is out of the country on a Scholarship. Said by Editor of Dom on 9 to Noon today.

      • bad12 4.2.2

Not the role of the media, really, what’s the atmosphere made up of on the planet you occupy, laughing gas perhaps,

Patrick,(Alfred E. Nuemann) Gower at the Labour Party AGM openly bullshitting over a ‘leadership battle’, is that the ‘role of the media’

The daily dose of political sewerage spewed forth as informed comment from the Heralds columnists, is that the role of the media,

It is pretty obvious that ‘the Hairdo’ thought he had more going on with Andrea Vance than the simple swapping of information, when the emails are released under the OIA we will know to what extent,(if any), Vance has lead ‘the Hairdo’ to entertain such a belief,

IF Vance has falsely lead ‘the Hairdo’ into such a ‘honey trap’ is that the role of the media…

  5. Ad 5

The Speaker has given United six more weeks to rot in public – a great further story for Winston.

The emails will come out within OIA timeframe of 20 days – a great further story for Winston.

Dunne will probably resign (or at minimum not seek re-election) after those stories refresh – a great further story for Winston.

Key will be rueing the day he put Carter in to the Speakers’ Chair – the Speaker no longer has the confidence of the House.

Winston will bump 7% on the back of this – amazing that there is no-one in the opposition who has a patch on him for this kind of action. Both Winston and Norman are powerfully more visible than Shearer.

    • bad12 5.1

Yes until the OIA requests are filed and replied to we can only speculate, what a grand day for ‘the Hairdo’ that will be,

His comeuppance for supporting this Slippery Government of Shysters is on the fast track to be forthcoming, sometimes some get the full quota of their just desserts…

    • ghostrider888 5.2

Peters has brushed off his statesman-like bearing (pretty obvious to watch), yet 7%; What were the NZ1 numbers in the recent ‘polls’? oh thats right, CB NZ1 at 4%, Reid, NZ1 at 2.2% : sometimes Ad…

  6. Polish Pride 6

What most people seem to have missed. Is that if Dunne did leak the information. Then you have just had a stellar example of what it looks like when a minister (or an MP) actually works for the people he should, Us as New Zealanders. You should actually get behind Peter Dunne and support him. If all MPs held govts to account like this then a lot more would get done for the good of all New Zealanders rather than pandering to foreign and corporate interests.

    • Kaplan 6.1

Normally I’d agree with that but to all appearances he leaked for lustful purposes, not for the people he claims to represent.

      • Colonial Viper 6.1.1

but to all appearances he leaked for lustful purposes

        😯

        • McFlock 6.1.1.1

          lol

There are many reasons he might have leaked, if he did. Funnily enough, I don’t get the impression that “sense of obligation to the public” is one of them, but I could be wrong.

But in that case, maybe he withheld half the emails between himself and the reporter out of the same twisted sense of honour that had him leaking a report when no leak was called for: maybe he felt able to disclose the emails he sent, but not the emails he received. No nooky involved.

Or maybe he had to delete all the emails where either party said “hey, you know how you leaked XYZ last month? Could you do the same with the GCSB thing? I’ll put you up in a five-star next time you go on hols, like last time” because it turned out he was the biggest leaker (all for personal gain) in NZ.

Who knows? But it’s certainly not “all appearances” lustful purposes – although that might be a story some parties are happy for people to settle on.

          • Polish Pride 6.1.1.1.1

I’m sure there’s a pretty good movie script in all of that A corrupt govt about to further suppress the people it is supposed to serve. A minister slighty n the outer, falls for a reporter and decides to leak upcoming govt policy for love and at the same time saving the people – based loosely on a true story..?

    • flossydoss 6.2

      1+ Polish Pride

    • Populuxe1 6.3

Why? I don’t think Dunne did this for particulalry benevolent reasons – he was, after all, one of the props holding up National’s majority (reason enough to want him goneburger)

  7. Phil 7

Just saw Patrick Gower on 3 News, disgraceful political bias disguised as reporting.
Stated towards the end of the piece to camera, that Labour’s (note Labour, no other parties) pressure on Key re Dunne
“isn’t some holier than thou attempt to stop leaks in parliament, their motive is simple, to ruin Dunne once and for all”
Wonderful piece of spin from Gower but so obvious it’s shocking.
Hopeful that someone within may be able to push for an retraction and apology from the jug eared one.

    • fender 7.1

That was way over the top. Winston is the one going for the kill. Poor reporting (or deliberate lies) from Gower, but we have come to expect that from him. National have had good returns from lending money to MediaWorks and Gower has played the game, and he does it all wearing that rat mask….what a guy.

  8. vto 8

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/8776490/Dunnes-portfolios-handed-to-MP-McClay – as Key says “how can Peters have all of that information?”

Well you know, this seems to be the most absurd thing. Winston Peters is getting all upset about Peters Dunne leaking information yet of course Peters must have been leaked the same information himself – and here he is making nothing but personal advantage out of it……

surely this doesn’t fly over our heads like everything else ……

    • Phil 8.1

So Peters had the info but decided not to make it public, that what you’re saying?
Decided to act legally, not to release a classified document to the press?
      Spin….much?
      Hmmm?

      • vto 8.1.1

No that’s not what I am saying. I’m saying “Winston Peters is getting all upset about Peters Dunne leaking information yet of course Peters must have been leaked the same information himself – and here he is making nothing but personal advantage out of it……”

        • RedLogix 8.1.1.1

Anyone else wondering exactly wtf is going on here? Surreal and baffling are just two words that come to mind. We’re missing a vital component from deep inside the beltway and without it nothing quite makes sense.

        • Anne 8.1.1.2

I made the same point on The Standard yesterday vto. There’s a component in this saga we have not heard about and I think it is tied up with… Peters receiving “electronic information” from… we don’t know who. Has he actually said they were emails? When he first started to ask questions of the PM in the House he wanted to know “if David Henry had sought copies of Dunne’s phone records.” Could that mean he received a record of text messages between Dunne and Vance rather than emails?

Just throwing into the mix for consideration.

Edit – just seen your comment Redlogix. You sure ain’t the only one. Getting rather weird.

  9. Robert M 9

Who leaked the Dunne-Vance emails is an interesting questions like who leaked the Brash emails. Presumably all Dunne-Vance email was run off in hardcopy in one go and supplied to Winston.
My old Political Science thesis supervisor always made the point who benefits. ? Who wins?
Also who really benefits from the determination of Matthew Hooton that the govt runs full term,
Surely with Key now established and with Labour considering Parker and Cunliffe as alternatives=Logically Key would have been better to go to the GG last thursday or friday.
