Tony Ryall standing down

Tony Ryall has announced that he will not seek re election at this year’s general election.

Cabinet minister and Bay of Plenty MP Tony Ryall has announced he will retire from politics at this year’s election after 24 years in Parliament.

Forty-nine-year-old Mr Ryall, who is Minister of Health and Minister for State Owned Enterprises, said this is the right year for him to leave politics and he’s up for the next challenge.

“I came to Parliament as a young man – I think I’m still a young man – and I think this is the right time for me, and also the right time for my family, the electorate and the country.”

His retirement brings to ten the number of National MPs who will not seek re election or who have been deselected.
