Trump final campaign ad

The American public has had to put up with an insufferably negative election campaign with two candidates who are widely regarded as dishonest, corrupt and unlikable. The media has been saturated with negativity, attacks and attack ads levelled by each candidate, and their surrogates, at the other.

Through most of the campaign, Clinton has been outspending Trump on ad buys massively.

Now, very ironically, the Trump campaign is attempting to steal Michelle Obama’s famous words “when they go low, we go high by launching a surprisingly positive-in-mood, forward looking closing campaign ad.

This anti-establishment ad reminds me of the elements which Michael Moore said that Trump uses in his appeal including:

  1. The rustbelt BREXIT.
  2. The last stand of the angry white man.
  3. The Hillary problem.
  4. The depressed Sanders vote.
  5. The Jesse Ventura effect.

Scott Adams, of Dilbert fame, and a late Trump supporter, thinks that the Trump campaign has hit the nail on the head with this ad.

Trump’s strongest message at this point is that Clinton is corrupt in a variety of hard-to-explain ways. People don’t need to understand the details. They just have to hear the message enough. This video uses visual persuasion perfectly to portray the halls of power and corruption versus the people united. The color red is exceptionally well-used. It activates us.

The full text of the ad is here.

Our movement is about replacing a failed and corrupt political establishment with a new government controlled by you, the American people.

The establishment has trillions of dollars at stake in this election.
For those who control the levers of power in Washington and for the global special interests, they partner with these people that don’t have your good in mind…

Reminder: if Clinton wins Florida OR Ohio OR North Carolina on Nov 8 (US time) Trump’s chances of getting 270 electoral votes are basically finished. Each of those states is a must win for him.

Today the Real Clear Politics no-toss ups map has Clinton ahead 297 to 241.

So despite being on the defensive this last week, Clinton still has a clear advantage on the electoral map.

The ad itself via You Tube is below.

Please comment by sharing your analysis and comments on the last days of the US campaign – but note that I will be moderating this post by deleting personal attacks/abuse without warning.

People don’t need to understand the details. They just have to hear the message enough.

Yep, who cares about details when you can just rely on emotive lies and allegations instead of the truth in order to win an election.

    • Colonial Viper 1.1

That’s for the purposes of a 2 minute TV ad.

However, the details are very clear, if you wish to delve into them. Sec Clinton, and a large part of her core staff team, have likely committed numerous felonies relating to the mishandling of government, classified and secret/top secret documents.

Remember, every single email containing government or confidential information which was not correctly handled represents a separate felony count.

Intent is not a factor in many of these laws – the standard is that of gross negligence (i.e. extreme carelessness).

    • Richard Rawshark 1.2

L, the point he makes about our jobs factories..no one said that till he came along, and ..

The millions of people worldwide in western countries over the last thirsty years have all been saying and thinking exactly that..

I understand Trumps Bullshit makes peoples skin crawl, but his message on the corrupt establishment rings true, why is that, if people didn’t think that, there would be no Trump.

      • Lanthanide 1.2.1

Sure, no one said that stuff about jobs and factories, that’s true.

But what Trump is promising won’t make any appreciable difference either, because he’s misdiagnosed the problem – it’s globalisation and new technology together that have destroyed jobs. Rolling back the globalisation won’t do anything about the technology; in fact US factories that have been opening up in the states in the last few years due to low energy prices are more highly automated than ever, requiring fewer jobs.

      • Cinny 1.2.2

Yes I agree, attack the establishment and they will turn out to vote.

        • Richard Rawshark 1.2.2.1

It’s desperation, from people with no hope, no representation.

and if this fails to get heard god help the government of Hillary.

  2. Lanthanide 2

“Today the Real Clear Politics no-toss ups map has Clinton ahead 297 to 241.”

And on that map, if Florida goes to Trump, Clinton ends on 268 and Trump wins.

538 thinks Clinton is ahead in Nevada, and likely to win based on unexpectedly strong early voting for Democrats in the state.

    • Blackcap 2.1

538 now has Trump ahead in Nevada. Its about 50/50 according to 538 so I would not be so sure of that one.

      • Lanthanide 2.1.1

The polling data and therefore their model doesn’t include early voting data.

      • Colonial Viper 2.1.2

Labour union organisation in Nevada has done an excellent job of turning out Democrat leaning workers to vote early.

For Trump to win in Nevada now, the very many unemployed/underemployed white vote in Nevada needs a big turn out on election day, as well as low black turn out. It’s against him to some extent now.

The polls may show Trump basically even in Nevada, but the Democrats have a far better developed ground game infrastructure turning out voters to the polls.

  5. Well, that was a relentlessly negative ad,

“Failed, corrupt, don’t have your good in mind, stop, massive illegal immigration, bled our country dry, destruction, robbed, stripped, stop, corrupt, force, corrupt, Trump.”

But appeals to racism and ignorance have been tried before. Happily, the NZ experience is that our Donald fell short post Orewa. That’s going to be the case in the States, too, because the American people aren’t as dumb as Trump needs them to be.

    • Colonial Viper 5.1

That’s going to be the case in the States, too, because the American people aren’t as dumb as Trump needs them to be.

Neither are they as deplorable or irredeemable as some have tried to make out.

      • Nobody has said that the American people are deplorable or irredeemable. That comment was clearly directed at the more bigoted parts of Trump’s support, a minority, obviously, but still a dangerous grouping. It was an politically unfortunate phrase, as it turned out, but still accurate.

        • joe90 5.1.1.1

          .

That comment was clearly directed at the more bigoted parts of Trump’s support

I reckon Propane Jane has identified the more bigoted parts of Trump’s support.

Yep Heres the the actual words
““You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right?” Clinton said. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic—you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”

She said the other half of Trump’s supporters “feel that the government has let them down” and are “desperate for change.”

LOLZ, TRP luv ya but you are WAY wrong there mate!!

Trump is onto exactly what I’ve been saying since the god damnb 80’s FINALLY someone brave enough to come out point the finger and accuse them. Thank god for Donald for that.

Those factories are the thousands of factories that were here.

      Oh yeah luv him.

    • Morrissey 5.3

Sadly, though, Te Reo, we have a government that is propped up by ACT, a viciously anti-Maori party. And National itself has a shameful history of racism, going back far earlier than Don “Trump” Brash.

Labour need to send little to see him for some.., talking lessons. He knows how to make a point old Donald, i’d follow someone getting rid of this NZ inc corrupt govt, as they are exactly the same. I mean Key plays golf with Obama. He’s in up to his neck.

    Making America Great again.

    This cannot end well.

In his first 100 days, Mr Trump said, he would cut taxes, “renegotiate trade deals and renegotiate military deals”,

    Making America Grate again

So, what could a Trump presidency mean for New Zealand?

Well for a start, rather than repeal the TPPA, the Donald has pledged to renegotiate all such trade deals in America’s favour.

This would see something already bad, turned into something much, much worse.
All junior economic partners to the TPPA, (and even some of the bigger economies as well), will see themselves opened up to even more undemocratic control by foreign, (read US), multinationals.

As well as suffering economic subservience to US business, on the defence front, this subservience will also be ramped up, recently resumed US warship visits, will morph into visits by openly nuclear armed and powered vessels.

New Zealand will be dragged deeper into fighting the US’s so called and never ending “War On Terror”, New Zealand cannon fodder will be deployed at US discretion to die in Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq, Syria , to fight the terrorist threat de jour, Al Qaeda, Isis, Taliban, Houthis. All with zero benefit to New Zealand’s interests, or defence, only serving to make New Zealand a target.

    • Richard Rawshark 7.1

Yep if he gets in and we want the nuclear umbrella of the USA to guard our nation we are going to have to pay him..

That’ll be the end of that no doubt.

      • Jenny 7.1.1

Personally it is only my opinion, but I think that the ability of the US nuclear umbrella to shield us from ICBMs or even shield us from the fallout from a Northern hemisphere nuclear exchange, may be slightly over rated.

        • Jenny 7.1.1.1

          Nuclear umbrella – Wikipedia

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_umbrella

As late as 1970, Australia considered embarking on nuclear weapons development[4] but finally agreed to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Since then Australia has been a proponent of nuclear disarmament.
The ANZUS alliance originally included Australia, New Zealand and the U.S., but after New Zealand’s nuclear-free zone was proclaimed, the U.S. no longer considered the country to be under its nuclear umbrella.[citation needed]

With the resumption of US warship visits, are we again considered to be under the nuclear umbrella?

          Just asking

        • Richard Rawshark 7.1.1.2

yeah exactly jenny. ridiculous isn’t it.

I’m more worried they will toast most of the planet and hope to keep NZ safe and just invade us afterwards, we got food water, plenty of beaches..

We are the planets emergency shelter. I think.

      • Macro 7.1.2

Your geo-political analysis is fortunately well out of date.

It may have escaped your attention – but NZ decided to remove itself from the nuclear umbrella during David Lange’s Labour Govt.

ANZUS no longer exists. As far as the US is concerned NZ is a friendly Nation – we are not Allies – there is a difference.

        • Richard Rawshark 7.1.2.1

well still, we will be that island left, that all the radiated victims head for..

  9. Very post truth ad – I found it very negative. I struggle to see how this 0.1 % billionaire game keeper has suddenly transformed into a poacher, one of the little people. Plus I see ZERO evidence that he will keep his promises. This whole campaign from trump is one big grift and the people that vote for him will be very sadly disappointed imo.

The ad is for the converted and i don’t see many new people or groups suddenly going for him. I am looking forward to the election – but I can’t work out if it’s the end of the beginning or the beginning of the end.

  10. Chooky 11

Ads are ads…a good ad!(imo)…a true ad !(imo)

(…this is the reason why many will vote Trump , despite not being Republicans…and actually being on the Left and in the working class and women and Blacks and Latinos….Clinton and the Clinton Foundation are just too corrupt)

    but I prefer discussions:

    ‘Criminal-in-chief?’

    https://www.rt.com/shows/crosstalk/365316-clintons-foundation-investigation-elections/

“The polls are tightening as well as the growing investigation around the Clintons and their foundation. Days before the presidential election voters are faced with an unprecedented dilemma – will they vote for a candidate facing criminal prosecution?

CrossTalking with Michael Flanagan, Debbie Hines, and H.A. Goodman.”

    • George Hendry 11.1

      Thanks Chooky 🙂

Although as soon as I heard ‘you can jump in any time’ I thought it would make the discussion less coherent and more adversarial.

It may be in a tiny corner of Youtube where only I go that one can read of the terrible corruption and murderous record of Hillary. Trump may say horrible things, and might, yes, might end up doing them. The reason to suppose that Clinton probably will is that she already has. He may become a war criminal, she already is, it would seem.

Yeah Nah! You don’t want to believe what you read or see in the Media. Including the above piece. You should try living here in heartland California. In a city 65,000 , not one Trump advertisement – anywhere! Oh sorry I did see one bumper sticker earlier this year. Minimal Clinton Signs – ours is one of them and it’s been in the front yard since August. We will all be glad when this farce is over and the toxic dust settles.

I randomly asked a guy in a truck in the supermarket carpark if he was voting for Trump. He said Hell no, I’m not going anywhere near him. That was reassuring. Generally no one is even talking about the election except that they will be glad when it’s over.

My view is that Hilary’s main problem is the old Albatross Bill and recently that Wiener creature. I will only say this about her , her choice in men is deplorable.

  13. Sanctuary 14

I am pretty sure whoever wins will only be a one term president. Clinton is a politician whose time has past. She represents and defends a broken consensus that many Americans are in near open revolt against. It is doubtful she will prove a revelation in office (and she has been in public life long enough I think for people to know what she be like). Against almost anyone other than Trump she will lose, unless the GOP implodes and that splits the alt-right vote. If the right is in disarray, she MAY then have a chance. But really, the Dems need to get a modern candidate for the 21st century, not someone whose politics in 2020 will still hark back to the 1980s and 90s.

If Trump wins he’ll split and destroy the Republican party. And he’ll be such a disaster that no matter who the Democrats pick they’ll win next time. There is no way Trump can deliver on his promises of reform. He’ll pretty soon be exposed as a liar, a blowhard, and unfit for the job.

The most important thing for American democracy is the 2020 redistricting. Even if they stay together, it is unlikely the Republicans will be able to sustain their gerrymander after that. If they are also split by then, then it will be goodnight nurse to the angry boomers and the Tea party right forever.

    • Phil 14.1

I am pretty sure whoever wins will only be a one term president.

Sitting presidents tend to be quite hard to dislodge.

Assuming Clinton wins, I can already see her re-election campaign in 2020 looking a lot like Truman’s in 1948. His campaign focused very heavily on critiquing the ‘do nothing’ republican-controlled congress and the voters agreed with him. Given what republican leaders are already saying they’ll do under a Clinton presidency, I’d be willing to wager now we’re going to see history repeat.

Interesting bit of publicity from a Trump rally today… man with a gun some folks say..

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3909514/Donald-Trump-rushed-away-Secret-Service-speaking-Reno-rally.html

    • Pasupial 15.1

Other folks say; man with a bit of paper:

none of those witnesses saw a weapon. One man said he believed a tightly folded poster had been misidentified as a firearm…

“It was like he was running forward to get to the front,” said a man who declined to give his name. “He was saying ‘excuse me, excuse me’, working his way to the front.”

      https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/nov/06/donald-trump-rushed-off-stage–secret-service-agents-rally-in-nevada

      [edit:]

Secret Service released a statement saying they did not find a weapon on Crites and he was later released.

Secret Service said the investigation is ongoing. The Secret Service uses magnetometers at presidential campaign sites, making it difficult for weapons to be smuggled into events.

Crites, a registered Republican, said he holds no ill will toward the Secret Service or police, who were just doing their job, and that his only intention was to show his displeasure with his party’s nominee.

“I just went with sign that said ‘Republicans Against Trump,’” he said.

        Fantastic publicity for Agent Orange

        • Pasupial 15.2.1.1

It’s almost like the response was preplanned, and just waiting for a protesting dupe to provide a target:

Crites said he wasn’t the aggressor and didn’t strike anyone, but once on the ground felt like he was being mobbed.

“Multiple people just tackled me down, kicking me choking me and just beating me up,” he said. “That’s when things even got crazier. I was on the ground and people were holding my arms, legs and I kept saying I can barely breathe. I was turning my neck just to get a little bit of air to keep from passing out.”…

This is the second brush with apparent danger that Trump has experienced in Nevada. During a Las Vegas rally in June, Michael Steven Sanford allegedly approached a Las Vegas police officer and tried to grab his weapon with the intention of shooting Trump.

Police thwarted the attempt and Trump was not removed from the stage during the June visit.

In Reno on Saturday, Trump returned to the stage shortly after to a raucous applause, thanking the Secret Service… Trump seemed unfazed by the incident, quickly launching back into his scheduled speech without giving details.

The interesting thing to see will be how the Senate goes. If the Democrats reach at least fifty and Clinton wins, there will at least be a new Supreme Court justice and then deadlock through minority filibusters.

If the Republicans hold the Senate and Clinton wins, there will be deadlock. Similarly if Trump wins and the Democrats gain the Senate there will also be deadlock and also a feeling of WTF.

If Trump wins and the Republicans hold the Senate it will be the darkest timeline. And likewise deadlock through filibusters.

Think about it – he is a candidate for one of the two biggest political parties in the US and he ISN’T an elite politician??? nah I don’t think so. This is part of the grift he is doing. Interestingly the Kali Yuga is noted for these post truth contradictions – where a billionaire tax dodger can say, and be believed, that he is a common joe, just a normal bloke. And also say that even if he isn’t, he is still going to work hard for the common joes rather than his natural, lifelong home of privilege, spoiltness, bankers, property speculation, private jets and ego.
