David Slack’s You wonder what Joe Biden may be able to do about it

But thank you Jesus no. Maybe it’s the lateness of the hour, maybe the Covid he doesn’t have is bearing down on him, but he hands it over to loyal Mike Pence and ABC breaks away.

And now it would appear they have had a prepared conversation all ready to go for just such an occasion: the President of the United States alleging electoral fraud.

They set out chapter and verse forcefully and compellingly: why the counting of votes is lawful; the absolute right of the people to have their say.

The denunciation is strong and it feels like a line is being clearly marked and every Republican who joins the conversation in the hours to follow reinforces the message: we tolerate a whole lot of his shit, but we’re not letting this stand. Haven’t seen anyone ask Mitch McConnell though.

Get a load of the guy. You’re going to the Supreme court? On what grounds? You know it’s not like hitting speed dial for one of your crooked layers, right?

Someone tweets: A lawsuit without provable facts showing a statutory or constitutional violation is just a tweet with a filing fee.

The US needs an intervention. First thing I'd do is standardise and simplify voting across all states so they are all doing the same thing.

Have three votes if they must, President, Senate and House but no more.

    • bwaghorn 2.1

Make the president a figure head only . Its fucking insane giving one person so much power . Get rid of the electoral collage . Go mmp .

Bust the toxic duopoly of dems repubs.

      • Muttonbird 2.1.1

Biden has the popular vote by approx 5 million. If he is not the next president then the Trump vote has been subsidised as being somehow more important.

  2. Treetop 3

I thought it would have been called overnight that Biden has reached 270 electoral college votes.

The NZ special votes are being released at 2pm today.

  3. SPC 4

Nevada is a certainty for Biden, but cannot be called without backing down from the early call to award Arizona to Biden (not a certainty).

It's possible a Biden win in Georgia (toss up) will decide it before Arizona. The OK news for Democrats is that it looks like both Senate races will be going back for a runoff (still expected to lose).

  4. Treetop 5

So the US election result comes down to counting the legal votes. Determining what the legal votes are is creating a problem. Late votes, when counting stops, recounting. Different rules for different states.

  5. dv 6

Why is Nevada taking so long to count, cf to say big states like New York, California?

    • Andre 6.1

Nevada is actually closer to finishing the count than NY or CA. But in all the trillions of parallel universes, there is not a single one where the margin is close in either one. Whereas Nevada is a deciding state and it is close, so the count has to be complete before making a call.

    • Anne 7.1

Best tweet because I suspect it is true. 😮

There's one guy in each state that counts the votes for president. Sometimes he forgets what number he's at and has to start all over again. Not a great system but what can we do. Do not flag this post as misleading it's true.

They call themselves a superpower and they can't even sort an efficient vote-counting system.

      • greywarshark 7.1.1

I am reminded of the Brits who made the ironic comedy recording How to win an election (or not lose by much).

There's a great skit where a chap is counting the votes one by one –

One million, two hundred thousand, three hundred and forty one….two…Would you like a cup of tea sir. A cup of tea, ooh yes. Very good – a cup of tea. Now where was I? Dead silence. The voice: One, two, three….

And there was another on housing. A clever architect had found a way to infill with very-small-housing, build in the spaces between walls or subdivide garages – smart thinking, you wake up in the morning, roll over and are in the car ready to go to work. You sleep in your work suit and hey presto away good and early. Such convenience! etc – (that isn't word for word).

Silly blokes! It was a great bit of political satire from 1964 and been reissued. I would like it to go up on youtube with just the audio and an image of Sellers, Secombe and Milligan to remember them by.
Leslie Bricusse was one of the writers and a producer
        David Platz was another producer

      • Treetop 7.1.2

So the person in each state who counts the votes for president are they impartial?

It might help if one from each side (Dems Repub) counts. Then again they might argue and hold up the counting.

      • anker 7.1.3

yes indeed, some superpower. Not that I am a fan of China's ways, but they managed to test something like 7 million people in 10 days for Covid (or so they say)

        • Peter chch 7.1.3.1

Do you seriously believe anything the Chinese government says?

let's just remember that the virus got a foothold because of the liesiof the very same Chinese government.

Whatever faults of the US, it is far better as a superpower than the Chinese Empire would ever be. Xi and the CCP are fast becoming Hitler and the Nazis reborn.

        • Peter chch 7.1.3.2

Hu to believe? At least, according to you, the CCP won't keep us waiting long wink

    • McFlock 7.2

A Kenyan journolist has been tweeting the US election in the way western media commentates on African elections.

      starts off:

#BREAKING Polls are set to open in 48 hours across the US as the authoritarian regime of Donald Trump attempts to consolidate its hold over the troubled, oil-rich, nuclear-armed, north American nation. Analysts are sceptical the election will end months of political violence.

And the thread goes on from there…

  6. Peter 8

I've counted a few votes. It must be hard doing it with a big squad all wearing the same colours yelling "STOP COUNTING!"

And their mates yelling "KEEP COUNTING!"

And their idol's son yelling "IT'S ALL FAKE!"

And their idol's little sober lawyer standing with them tucking his shirt in.

  7. Chris T 9

Forgive me if this is a stupid question.

But why are these states taking so long to count, when their voter turn out is on the lower end of the spectrum compared to other States?

    • Descendant Of Smith 9.1

      Different rules about whether:

      1. You can accept votes by mail received after election day
      2. Different rules on how many days after election day that can be received (longest is 10 I think)
      3. Different rules on when you can start counting them
      4. Different levels of postal voting – more likely to be democrats so those locations taking longer

Also a factor is not the size of the state but the size of the voting catchment. Large cities are a factor than a state with lots of smaller locations..

Further delay are being caused due to Trump's legal action e.g. some now have to separate out votes received after election day.

Constitutionally the individual states (local government) set their own voting rules to reduce the ability of the state (central government) to manipulate the rules to suit themselves.

    • Roy Cartland 9.2

Also, delaying the count gives DT more time to 'prove' that it's fraudulent. So any mayor or governor sympathetic to him can clutch at that straw. (They wouldn't have to deliberately obstruct counting, just under-resource it.)

Yes it's corrupt, but they're quite open about that now.

    • Tricledrown 9.3

Mail in votes take much longer to count because each vote has to have the signature and barcode cross checked manually. This election electronic voting has been stopped and a paper trail vote reinstated.

  8. ianmac 10

A bunch of votes were filmed being burnt. This was published by Republican people. Aha! Evidence of voter fraud?

But no. The glimpse of the ballots before they burnt showed that they were Sample Ballots sent out to help voters vote. What naughty little desperate Republicans you are.

    • Peter 10.1

If that's desperate from roused up, stirred up angry folks what is it when the son of the President is using the false stuff as bait and incitement?

  9. WeTheBleeple 11

Pennsylvania should seal the deal today for Biden (if the count comes in today as predicted).

  10. Peter 12

The Man is on TV! His cognitive genius' cogs are at work … 'miraculously' numbers changed, totals went up …

Ummmmmmm, its called COUNTING THE VOTES! You sort of have to laugh. It should simply be pathetic but this is in a different realm.

    • WeTheBleeple 12.1

That was the most ridiculous concession speech I've ever heard.

    • joe90 12.2

He's fomenting violent civil unrest telling by millions of Americans that their vote is being stolen from them. Dangerous times ahead, 'Murica.

  11. Grey Area 13

I'm watching a rambling shambles on CNN from an ill man who needs someone to step in and tell him it's over and lead him away. Much as I loathe him it's pathetic and very sad.

    • Treetop 13.1

Record Covid infections in the US and all Trump is interested in is creating civil unrest, no regard for others. The sooner Trump goes the sooner America can tackle the big issues, unity, Covid, the economy, climate change, unemployment, health care, housing, violence.
