Today is the beginning of Songkran, the Thai New Year. If you are anywhere near a Thai temple go on down this weekend and check it out. If the weather holds, maybe expect a bit of a water fight amongst the youngsters (and the oldies too if they’re into it). Of course there’ll be wonderful food available as well as the usual twenty-four hour party people getting down to some rootsy mor-lam and luk thung music.

My / family fave is in Timaru. It looks like a no-where little takeaway, but the owner / chef is from a Thai farming / restaurant family and she’s the real deal. The food is authentic (yes I wandered through Thailand, albeit many years ago now) and spectacular.
Anyway – Mai Thai Takeaways, 90D Evans St (i.e. Highway 1), just opposite the KFC / McDonalds complex. Despite the name they have some small tables for eating in. Treat yourself…

That’s the sort of dentist to have. Check-up, all clear apart from a few decades of wear and tear. Clean and descale. Done. And cost about $85.
My sister’s Christchurch dentist charged her $180 but refused to scale and clean. He booked her into a “Dental Hygienist” who charged $110 for a scale and clean. Robber!
You lucky bugger. I havn’t been to the dentist for years without something needing to be repaired or replaced. And I’m not being had… was a School Dental Nurse in another life.
Talking of Thai restaurants. Monsoon in Devonport has a good reputation. Can’t vouch for the authenticity, but it must be close to it and… delicious. Great atmosphere too.

A couple of weeks ago my wife and I went to Wat Buddhasamakee to, erm, I don’t know what the proper words are, but anyway, my dad died at the end of February and I just didn’t have the money to fly to the States for his funeral, so my wife suggested that we go to the temple to have the monks pray for my dad. Part of the deal is offering food to the monks. Well, let me tell you, the Thai community makes sure these guys don’t go hungry. All sorts of Thai tucker on offer. After the monks have their meal everyone else is welcome to dig in. Oh. My. Word! Lovely complex flavours with jolts of heat that had me occasionally blowing and sucking air (just like I like it). Now this is the stuff that makes Thai food a revelation to the palate, not the toned down stuff.
You would think there there would be dental insurance out there which people could buy, but oh no, its only available as an add-on to general health insurance.
