   Some golf, some wine, and some card games in the evening… bliss.

     Oh, I had it on Tuesday night on PC due to it unlocking early. Finished it at 3am Wednesday. Just finished co-op yesterday with a random guy from Auckland.

     Good fun.

   Harvesting the kumera, bottling the bock beer, sampling older brews, a little blues and a BBQ, hosting the great niece and her parents, rejoicing in a successful recuperation after an operation ten weeks ago and reading Tim Gautraux’s short stories “Waiting for the Evening News,” a fictional version of Joe Baigent’s “Deer Hunting with Jesus.”

    I love Easter!, not because I am religious, far from it actually. I love Easter because it is the one time of the year that nearly all of us get off at the same time.
    Groups and sporting organisations can use Easter for reunions, celebrations or just for a good old fashioned family get together.

    This is the one time of the year when I cast aside my free market ideals, this is the one time of the year when I fall out with my right wing compatriots.

    Easter is NOT about the free market, nor is it about ‘denying’ anybody the ‘right’ to work, it is all about giving most of us a break and doing it at a time when we can be fairly sure our friends and family are also enjoying time off.

    I also have no time for the argument that says “what about struggling business owners”, if a business (any business) cannot stand being closed for 3.5 days a year then that business is stuffed anyway.

    Nope..Easter is all about family and a relaxing break before we all head into the long winter months, I hope you all have a great break and stay safe on our roads.

      That may be so but what about the fact that easter weekend is the last long weekend that most gardeners start getting ready for the winter so it’s a pain that the labour dept says they should be shut,  And as long as there is no gun held to the employees head about working.  And most of the garden centers are owner operated so thats covered.  the rest of it is the one thing that seems to have been completely missed and thats a little thing called personal choice.  They choose to work.

        Sorry, the “but the shops are closed’ argument just does not wash, everybody knows Easter is coming up, everybody knows that the shops will be closed for two days (yes, Two whole days!!!!!)

        It makes me wonder how those of us who are north of 40 managed to survive childhood, imagine how hard it would have been for our mothers to cope with supermarkets only being open five days a week!

        And as for the “no gun to the head comment”. ….yeah right….

        Yes, in a perfect world nobody would be forced to work at Easter, and given that I am a right winger I have some sympathy with the argument put forward by the self employed that they should not be forced to close their business, however the social benefits far outweigh the economic benefits in my book.
        Give most people the time off and let them enjoy the break, it is not going to kill the economy or kill any business.

      I remember Sundays used to be like that as well. Much as we may not have got on with our rellies and neighbours- at least we got to see them. These days Sunday is like any other day.

    Apparently Easter Friday is a work day where I am… but beautiful weather (23 deg at the moment) so lots of visiting the ostermarkts for traditional food and drink and sitting around in parks while all the shops are closed. Then to find a bonfire of sorts – thats after the boys go around with wooden instruments because the church bells have gone to Rome hmmm all sounds a bit strange, but I’m sure it’ll make sense on the day….

    Easter fires are lit during the night before Easter Sunday. People meet around the fire to sing and dance. The more agile and adventerous actually jump over the fire… [from pagan traditions]
    Church bells are not in use from Green Thursday until the resurrection service in Easter Night (Saturday). Traditionally, children are told that they have flown to Rome. Minister boys walk from door to door and make noises with wooden instruments called “Ratschen” instead.

    Looks like the weather is going to be a bit sometimey this weekend. Never mind, got all my bases covered. I got a project to help out on. My second cousin’s daughter (third cousin?) from the US has sent me one of those ‘flat stanley’ thing-a-ma-gubs where you take a paper doll around town and take a few photographs and write a bit about where where you are. The paper doll, photos and notes are sent on to another rellie or friend somewhere else in the world and they do the same. The paper doll eventually finds its way back to the kid and he/she presents the travels of their ‘flat stanley’ to the class. If the rain holds off we’ll get some pictures of touristy things like punting on the Avon and perhaps some shots of the rubble around town as well.

    If the weather turns to custard I won’t be too put out either. I have this admittedly eclectic taste for low-brow Mexican entertainment such as Lucha Libre (masked professional wrestlers) and Jaripeos (rodeos). Earlier this week I received several DVDs from overseas that I’d ordered and if the weather turns to shit I’ll happily hunker down in front of the ol’ TV and enjoy the Blue Demon taking on Mil Mascaras or seeing guys getting thrown from the backs of jumping twisting bulls.

    Omaka Air Pageant this weekend. We are a bit short of cash so will find a spot on the hills above Blenheim and be among the squatters. Youngest son and nephew and family home for Easter. Wife on the other side of the World so lets live it up – umm quietly.

      I’ll be at home with the binoculars, post harvest. Just got hold of some spent barley malt from a local brewery of which I have been known to sample the good product thereof (Scotch Ale) which will do very well as a soil conditioner. Double bangs for the bucks.

    The question is of course, can I get all the parts from the local Bunnings? Along with not going broke since I don’t have all teh tools… But damn, the tomatoes (and chilli’s, capsicums etc) would so be worth it.
