Aroha is love, you can give it away…

“You can get away with anything, as long as you’re respectful about it” – former Maori Party strategist Matt McCarten on National’s dealing with the Maori Party.

So, another day, another little humilitation for the Maori Party. All that matters to the leaders is that the coalition with National doesn’t fail. They turn a blind eye to all the policy defeats, all the embarrassments. Instead, they live in a make believe world where they’re making wins for their people.

They’ve got a double-think going. They get upset about each time they’re screwed over but all is forgotten and they still think National is treating them right as soon as Key batters his eyelashes at them.

I don’t think they’re ever going to walk away from the coalition with National. It will cost them supporters – especially if Labour’s Maori MPs get their act together – but they’re tied in now. At least until the next election – if the numbers are there they’ll switch to Labour in an instant.

By the way, just what the hell is Whanau Ora anyway? I don’t ask that from a position of ignorance like some rightie drooling ‘what does the Ministry of Women’s Affairs do?’ I’ve read the MSD docs on Whanau Ora and it just seems like a complete bunch of waffle. This is Turia’s big project? I’d be worried if my kid put it in as a social studies assignment.
