The results are in and Australia has voted overwhelmingly in favor of allowing same sex marriages.  The response rate was 79.5% which is a phenomenal response for a postal referendum.  Over 12 million votes were cast.

Youngest voters replied strongly with 18 and 19 year olds voting as often as their older counterparts.

Yes vote was 61.6% of the total, and the no vote 38.4%. Spoilage rate was 0.2%.

All states votes yes, New South Wales lowest at 59%.

Inner city electorates were overwhelmingly in favor.

133 commonwealth electorates voted yes and only 17 voted no.

Now it is over to the Parliament. It will be interesting to see Tony Abbott’s response.
