National claims credit for Waitangi Day

I did not think I would ever have a need to use this graphic again. But National claiming that they are responsible for the successful Waitangi Day celebration is delusional and the graphic seems very appropriate.

From Newshub:

Senior National figures are dismissing suggestions peaceful events at Waitangi are the sole result of the feel-good effect of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her Labour-led Government.

They want to take some of the credit for this year’s Bay of Islands celebrations, which have been without the acrimony and protest that marked previous events.

Senior MP Steven Joyce, who had a sex toy thrown at him in 2016, says that can be put down to moving the politicians’ welcome to the upper marae at Waitangi, and National taking celebrations around the country.

The Ngāpuhi iwi had decided they wanted a more positive celebration, he told 1News.

“I think probably a little bit much to sheet it home to her [Ms Ardern]. It’s really been the shift of Ngāpuhi and the decision to bring it up to the main Treaty grounds.”

National leader Bill English, who last year refused to attend Waitangi as Prime Minister in a dispute over speaking rights, credited the decision to go elsewhere in the country for a better atmosphere.

“I think the decision worked. What had been going on there was not about dissent, it was just about disorganisation and disrespect,” he told RNZ from Bluff, where he is attending Ngāi Tahu celebrations.

What is most bizarre is that the first aspect they claim credit for, the moving of the celebration from the lower to the upper marae was the decision of the Waitangi Trust Board and not National. And many of the the nation wide celebrations have been going on for a while. For instance the Waitangi day festival held at Hoani Waititi Marae that English attended last year has been going on for a number of years and is the work of the marae and Te Whanau o Waipareira with some help from Auckland Council and the local licensing trusts with no assistance from Central Government. Taking credit for a decision made by another entity and for a festival run by another entity while at the same time dismissing Jacinda’s clear effect on the event is just petty not to mention dishonest.

They spent nine long years blaming everything that happened during their reign on the previous Labour Government. Are we now going to have the reverse happen where they will claim credit for everything that the Labour NZ First Green government or others achieve?

Finally one of the contenders for best use of social media has been found. Take a bow Enzo.
