Hide and Banks do not strike me as the kind of men you feel safe about having too much power. They never have been and they never will be. Yet so far the ongoing review of the so called ‘Supercity Plan’ has suggested it’s only weakness is that the Lord Mayor wouldn’t have enough power.

Instead, he should hold unprecedented power over the decisions of a body meant to serve all of Auckland’s 1.4M citizens.

Hide and Banks are not the best people to entrust with that kind of unchecked power. They rule by divide rather than by uniting people, and I don’t think they’ll govern in my interests or the nation’s greater interests.

I really don’t want to have to explain to my kids in years to come, when they ask me why Auckland is ruled by unaccountable authoritarians, that the people responsible for the mess were not my leaders. That kind of defence hasn’t worked in the past and it won’t work in the future.

The time to fight this insanity and scrap the ‘plan’ is now. Pretty soon it’ll be too late.
