Environmentalists were always suspicious of biofuels, seeing them as a half-step and worrying about the consequences of using grains as the fuel source. It was George W Bush’s subsidies to biofuel producers, introduced with the twin goals of being seen to do something about climate change and increasing returns for farmers in electorally vital Mid-West states, that started the biofuel explosion.
Not enough food, not enough energy. Along with climate change, these could well become the defining issues of international politics in the next decade.
