When memes attack

Much to write about, but alas no time to write. Here’s just one quick observation.

I bet we’ve heard the last of “Planet Labour”. It was always a lame, try-hard attempt to ridicule issues instead of confronting and debating them. Typical of the Key Nats, smarm instead of substance.

In one bizarre lapse in Parliament, the PM created a real viral meme to eclipse Planet Labour – welcome to “Planet Key”. Golf courses abound, toilets, the poor, and irritating questions are banned.

The ridicule of Planet Key has been widespread, up to and including Herald cartoonists. Google “Planet Labour” (site:nz) and you get 706 hits. Do the same for “Planet Key” and it is 73,700. Ooops.

National can’t control the economy, can’t control the exodus to Australia, can’t control the GCSB, can’t control its coalition, can’t control its privatisation agenda, can’t control its slow but inexorable decline in the polls, and now they can’t control their political framing either. The speed with which Planet Key caught on is a measure of the public recognition that the Nats have lost the plot.
