I am well aware that Cantonese is the language of Hong Kong...but you fail to address the points raised. It dosnt matter as it is obvious you appear unable to do so. Expecting more from a blog is my failing.
The statement that was made was if he didnt speak Te Reo he would not be promoted....he works in IT. I wont mention the languages he speaks or the council for fear of doxing him. Indefensible.
Not quite true Robert...I have a family member (works for a local body) who was told that there was no prospect of promotion if they didnt speak Te Reo....that may change now but 6 months ago it had something of an impact...especially as he spoke 4 other ...
No links i notice but never mind. As I understand it Mandarin may (emphasise may) have been the language of the elites...and possibly for some time (centuries even) however the language of the masses was Cantonese....come the opening of China some 100 odd ...
I'll tell you a story, cause why not. I was in a pub in the 1990s and got into a conversation with a Chinese national...we were discussing Chinas industrialisation and i mentioned that my childrens school wanted them to learn Japanese and I said Id rather ...
"One of the main reasons Cantonese is of such interest is perhaps because it is significantly older than Mandarin. It was first recorded after the fall of the Han dynasty, around 220AD, over 2000 years ago. In contrast, Mandarin only came into being around...
Yes in Quebec French is predominant...the rest of Canada not so...as the article notes, after 50 years the level of french speaking is declining...and I also note the secession movement of Quebec from Canada...is that what we seek? May be a little more ...
I imagine its always possible in the same vein to get a Te Reo translator if necessary......it didnt (and dosnt) require all government employees to be bilingual....or at least one would hope not. Should that be the case then we are adding addition cost to...
I'll take my chances too....nothing like a bit of shade from a grand old oak
It is interesting to consider how Cantonese and Mandarin are used. Cantonese is the far more original language being some thousands of years old whereas Mandarin is a relatively new language (simplified?)....Mandarin is now spoken by far more people than ...
Canada has had a bilingual policy since 1969....and as this article demonstrates after 50 years bilingualism is in decline. https://policyoptions.irpp.org/magazines/september-2022/bilingualism-doomed-in-canada/
Do you extend that to local government? How about being proficient in NZ Sign language?
Oddly enough many trees live for centuries....sometimes millennia. As to what assumptions the author has made that may depend upon the purpose of the piece...is it an appraisal of our ETS implications or is it an appraisal of the benefits of forestry for ...
"Currently there are no legitimate units that the Government can purchase from overseas. I made mention of that in my previous article two weeks ago. The Climate Change Commission knows this and the Labour Government had also come to that conclusion by the...

Let me know when you find them.....theres quite a list for them to work on.
"More "duplicate governance" was step too far for many, but not for cost, imho." The racism claim was overstated imo....the fact there was no advantage, and several potential disadvantages (costs/risks) made many have a second take...and then the flaws ...
They could, and it may surprise you who they would accept. But lets assume they couldnt agree...80% is a high bar....what then?
No Patricia it would not have enabled any more borrowing....indeed the way to reduce borrowing cost was for the central government to directly fund it....something 3 Waters sought to avoid. Yes we would still pay, and pay for more than was necessary under ...
A head of state elected by MPs. Whom do you think the current lot of MPs may elect?
So you wish to sever from the Monarchy?....what would you like to replace it with?
I suspect Mr Trotter is doing an AD....stirring the pot for effect. His case is designed to force people to think rather than seek comfort in slogans. It will likely only prompt those so inclined.
And how would that be calculated? Would we discount the cost of their education? Is the resident contribution to infrastructure equal and measurable? How do we measure their life expectancy and projected future costs to public expenditure? Assuming we ...
As was frequently pointed out 3 Waters does not (didnt) decrease the cost of the required infrastructure....indeed due to its duplicate governance structure it likely increased it. We will have to pay (one way or another) for improved water quality and ...
The Maori Party is not immune to less than desirable candidates. All of parliament need to have a long hard look at themselves and consider what they are allowing in our name.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/aucklander/news/distilling-your-own-spirits-a-drop-of-the-easier-stuff/G42KDWF3RR2GZKRIZXAQ73IVRA/ How many sell?, who knows but most the home distillers I knew in the 90s certainly did....looks like the fad is back in fashion. ...
Fair call...addiction may be an unjustified descriptor. Though rereading what I wrote it was offered as a possibility....."(and that may be due to an alcohol addiction, or may be due to other reasons) "
Dosnt need to be something as challenging as a global pandemic....it may be simply failing to implement foreshadowed policy
Predicting the future is always fraught. As we discovered with the 2017 Labour led administration what is mooted at the beginning of a new administration is not necessarily what transpires. Time will tell.
