What is it with National Party leaders and their apparent desire to commit political suicide on bFM?
First Don Brash’s sensational harakiri moment when, after a week of teeth pulling torment as he wiggled and squirmed away from the truth, he finally admitted that he knew that it was the Exclusive Brethren behind anti-government pamphlets distributed anonymously just before the 2005 election. Here’s the transcript from 8 September 2005:
Noelle McCarthy (95B FM Radio Host): So apart from indicating that they were going to pray for you was there anything else of a campaigning nature discussed?
Dr Brash: Oh yes they indicated that they were going to campaign against the government and they were going to issue some pamphlets, but I did not read those pamphlets and had absolutely no part in reading them, writing them, funding them, or distributing them and it’s high time that the media pointed out that out and the Greens have been arguing that the National Party was behind those pamphlets. And we are not. And the people who were involved with these pamphlets have now said who they are.
McCarthy: So you were aware that these, these. this group was going to use other methods besides the power of prayer to support the National Party?
Dr Brash: I knew they were going to issue some pamphlets attacking the Government and I said that’s tremendous, I’m delighted about that because the Government’s lousy and should be changed.
Now John Key decides that having dug the hole he may as well keep digging and so turns his initial stupid, thoughtless remark on the war in Iraq being over into something worse – damn close to a lie, in fact – instead of just admitting he got it wrong.
