150k comments and rising…

Sysop

Well the discussion keeps going on, and as you know I like marking these occasions as the database steadily grows (and my backup nightmares keep increasing).

The 150,000’th accepted* comment was by Lanthanide here at just after midday. He was explaining the real world politics to someone who preferred their own myths.

When the 100,000th comment was passed back in July 2nd 2009, someone said this on that post

[PS Marty reckons if the growth pattern holds we’ll reach 1,000,000 a few months before the 2014 election -nearly two years for the first 100K, just five for the next 900K. It’s enough to give Lynn kittens. Let’s try to beat it 🙂 ]

Hah… It took 9 months to gestate the next 50k comments. That is roughly 185 comments per day on average. It is up from the roughly 145 per day average at the 100k comment level.

A straight line progression based on the last 9 months says it will be twelve and a half years before I have to worry about having a million comments in the database. Marty was a trivial optimistic basing it on the rate of rise in comments from a slow start – ie a bit of a semi-log curve. Happily (for the sysop), it isn’t growing that fast.

For the record, here are previous events recorded…

4000th post (about end of October 2009)

100,000th comment (July 2nd 2009)

3000th post (June 8th 2009)

2000th post (November 20th 2008)

1000th post (May 22nd 2008)

1st post (August 15th 2007)

* Spam comments and comments by people who are banned and the comment is trashed are not counted. These are just under 46k – almost all of which are spam.
