You could argue that GWB 43 ended the fig leaf of soft power and initiated the era of naked use of force power with the invasion of Iraq (albeit via the pretense of multilateral action against WMD), but for those who missed it, Trump has formally abandoned soft power.

For those who like historical parallels, there is the end of the Mycenaean age, after the looting and pillaging of Troy …

    • Anne 2.1

Back in the 1960s my Dad used to say… the next Hitler would come out of America.

      • SPC 2.1.1

The era of the return of the strongman is always hydra-headed, as it was then – Italy, Germany then Spain.

There was the chance of a soft power multilateral world – but the PNAC boys, now the American-Russian Israeli axis (Putin is the leader of the white race nation movement Trump embodies in the USA, which is why it was so easy for Maryia Butina to infiltrate the NRA) and that legitimises tyranny everywhere and assertive nationalism – Turkey and China and Brexit.

A vote of mostly house Democrats recently reauthorized the GWB era patriot act as part of a budget bill. This seems to summarize how seriously this russophobia is taken by the party insiders.

      • SPC 2.2.1

Meh. It shows more how patriotic nationalism takes over a democracy and renders dissent as popular as it was in the era of the HUAC. The Democrats, with a few exceptions such as POTUS 44, voted for the regime change in Iraq and the original Patriot Act.

I see that Matthew's petition has been received by Parliament.

Former Auditor-General Martin Matthews seeks redress over resignation asking for the Enquiry to look into his being forced out as Auditor general be reopened.

This seems to be a very important issue for NZ democracy. Will take a while.

  3. SPC 4

So the black caps will journey

onto the field in Perth in 40 degree temperatures (start at the hottest time of the day and call that a day/night game) and half will have heat exhaustion by the end of the first session

then learn to smoke two packets a day in Sydney bush fire capital of the western world

then on Boxing Day face an examination of their helmet manufacturing on an MCG pitch not fit for a state game last week.

Who does their health and safety?

An electric engine Beaver (not the cute little furry one) had its first test flight. All the more impressive is the amount of drag from it's two floats and fiction during a water take off on the Beaver.
