Is it just me, or is it the rearmament of Japan likely to set off conflict with China as anything else.

Japans current territorial conflicts are with Russia and Taiwan, thus in the latter context China also. Related to uninhabited islands in each case.
If the Korea and Taiwan matters are resolved without war, those disputes would not be an impediment to continuing peace (there would no war over the issue).
Japan has joined the QUAD (India, Oz, Japan and USA) – whose role appears to be to prevent Chinese hegemony over the ASEAN area/guarantee transit/support international law as per the disputed South Sea Islands (response to Chinese placing bases on the atolls after promising not to).
