Is Boris gone?

Reports from the UK suggest that Boris Johnson’s reign as Prime Minister may be over because it appears sufficient conservative MPs have a sufficient sense of morality to be outraged about Boris’s Covid lockdown busting ways.

Stay tuned …

Update:  Media is reporting he won by 211-148.  Over 40% of Conservative MPs voted against him.

The last time a leadership vote was held Theresa May survived it by 200-117 but was gone within a few months.

I suspect that Boris will fight for his life to retain his position and will not go gracefully.  A new spill motion cannot be held for 12 months.

Sufficient conservative MPs have a sufficient sense of self preservation.

Great comment! That covers them all, on both sides of the Johnson position.

Either Boris is damaging his Party or one of his Party mates sees (and seizes) an opportunity to oust him as their Leader. Nothing to do with morality or lack thereof.

Oops, result in. Of course he stays. It's very similar to the GOP / Trump situation. Both of them have the political sycophants by the short and curlues.

An arithmetic win for Boris Johnson – but boy, look at those numbers.

We know that 148 Conservative MPs think the country would be better off shot of him.

That's 148 Conservative MPs, not floating voters.

That is a far higher proportion of his MPs attempting to eject him than wanted shot of Theresa May when she faced a confidence vote.

And she was gone within six months.

His supporters say the situation is very different now – but this vote means this issue won't go away.

The result is at the upper end of the expectations of the rebels, who never expected to win.

They will see this as losing the battle, but the war to replace him goes on.

Closer than I thought it would be.

160 Conservative MPs have roles where they get more money largely as a result of the Johnson's patronage – they are cynically called "the payroll vote" – who can be guaranteed to vote for Johnson. So 75% of backbench MPs voted to get rid of Johnson.

In theory, the rules of the 1922 committee mean another challenge can't happen for one year now. Then it will be too close to the next election to oust him. But in reality, if the polls don't turn around in the next six months then he'll be a goner at Xmas.

He won't last till the end of the year.

The result of the vote gives the Conservatives a chance to choose and anoint another leader well before the next election..

Imagine supporting this entitled, narcissistic, dishonest bully because tina.

Racist attacks rose 400% following Johnson's 'letterboxes'/burqa column, and half of all attackers quoted him.

Pretty sure Boris being a dick is not really the place we should be laying the blame for terrorism though.

This has never been more relevant. Rule by a mediocre person or group

I prefer to consider it more "Totalitarianism by swing voter". Where parties only cater to those that are likely to change their vote.

The safe seat paradox is a subset of the problem.

Unfortunately ditching Boris would not fix this. Nor would electing Starmer.

Like Trump, a distractor drawing attention away from those doing the real dirty business.
