Embattled Christchurch City Council CEO Tony Marryatt was asked on Campbell Live last night if he is worth his $500K salary. He said it is the market rate (in fact, its 100K over the median) and he would do the job whether the pay “was 200K or a million”. Now, doesn’t that mean the market clearing price for his labour is $200K? The Council could do a lot with an extra $300K. When’s the pay cut coming?
The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...
The server will be getting hardware changes this evening starting at 10pm NZDT.
The site will be off line for some hours.
The Council could do a lot with an extra $300K
Instead they have to find an additional $68K out of their income which, all things considered, has probably declined a little in the last 18 months.
I say call his bluff. Dis-establish his position and get him to reapply for the new job at $200K per year conditional on him and his family living in Christchurch.
Brill idea Kev! What about making him live in the red zone for a while with no flushing loo etc?
Yo brother ! Don’t hold your breath.
Marryatt appears to be an accomplished bureaucratic warrior, a confidant of the Mayor, and a man who has probably already brainstormed exit strategies with his legal team. He is the mayor’s man.
There is only one solution .. a spill.
Christchurch (Māori: Ōtautahi) needs an inclusive, transparent, election for a new council with the broadest possible mandate to clear the air, to encourage the broadest possible range of talent to apply, and to end up with honest, reliable, and accountable management with their ‘skin in the game’.
It may be necessary to consider enlargement to its previous structure to make it more representative. Cutting its numbers allowed capture by the current self-interested cabal.
It may need decisive action. I have yet to see a credible explanation for the continuing quake activity.
This could also (not that I wish it) happen in any of the other major cities.
If POAL can getaway with getting rid of its workers and contracting it out to cheaper labour, then why can’t Christchurch Council do the same with their CEO?
Who says POAL are going to get away with it?

Why Parker and Marryatt must go! #20 1:20pm
In my opinion, Mayor Bob Parker and his CEO – Tony Marryatt should have been bringing the city together. But instead we have a city torn apart.
Parker and Marryatt now find themselves at the head of an organisation that the Prime Minister himself has described as dysfunctional. While he is correct, I believe that we have a city that can rise again and hold its place nationally and globally and I have every confidence that the people have the will to achieve this.
Mr Brownlee my say that the sacking of Marryatt is a – “dumb solution” arising from “woolly thinking”. However for the city at this critical time to recover and recover strongly, the people need to have absolute confidence and trust in the leadership of their city. Under the current Mayor and CEO – we do not.
Please Mr Key – support the growing call for you to allow Christchurch to have a fresh election. For the sake of our recovery – we cannot afford to wait until 2013.
