State Services to fold into DPMC?

I’ve heard the State Services Commission are investigating their own demise, by looking into whether its functions should fold into the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Has anyone heard anything similar?

If true, it would be an incredible power shift in favour of the office of the Prime Minister. And you have to wonder, does John Key simply want to extend his personal bullying capabilities even further?

    Helen, Heather, SIS – anyone?

Given how thoroughly ineffectual SSC have been over the years, I can’t imagine that it will make a blind bit of difference. They’re hardly known as a hotbed of good governance!

I hear that the courts are also being merged into the DPMC. Labour made it abundantly clear that courts are just a nuisance to parliament as parliament know more about the law and how it should be applied than anyone. Nuisance positions like the Auditor General and the Police Commissioner should also be absorbed by the DPMC.

This will ensure that the sort of BS accountability stuff that was so detrimental to Labour (who just wanted to live the dream that the role of govt was what they defined it to be in their own best interests) is not a problem for National.

Move on boys, girls and apprentice Muldoon’s; nothing to see here. Just the formalisation of what Labour did informally supported by partisan hacks (with no desire for democracy) towing the ‘courageous corruption the ends justify the means’ line.

My mother always said, if you don’t have anything useful to say, don’t say anything at all.

It’s great to be able to write alongside The Standard’s talented authors. You guys have been doing a great job. Hopefully I can contribute something useful!

    • Shouldn’t make much difference, I hear court trials are next on Garth McVictims list of unnecessary government waste.
