The Spin Off have kindly drafted a list of foods that are either "woke" or "non woke" but for those who can't be bothered to read them, they have also equally as kindly served up a simple formula based on the reported reckons of one, David Breen Seymore.

    • food from a non-English-speaking non-white culture = WOKE
    • food from a non-English-speaking white culture = SUSPICIOUS
    • food from an English-speaking white culture = NOT WOKE

I'd be looking very closely at which party donors will have links to the new providers of the lunchs.

    How dare they.

      From the link:

Luxon told the reporter he did not believe sushi and quinoa were woke.

And in the same building, at the same time:

"If you don't get that sushi's woke, then I don't know how to wake you up"

Seymour's populism, but still kind of weird. Doesn't he know you can get sushi most places now? Maybe he's thinking of Epsom.

        • bwaghorn 2.1.1.1

He's not a racist but he can't stand that foriegn muck!!!

Kenneth Williams knew about foreign muck!

            A brilliant Peter Cook-written recording from 1959 about a cup of tea…….

Sushi is something that can be easily, safely and cheaply prepared for later consumption, also doesn't need heating and nearly everyone will eat. So ideal for school lunches.

Seymour’s pitching to a very small sector of voters here, Winston’s voters.

        • Betty Bopper 2.1.1.3

Sushi is definitely mainstream in NZ. To the extent that one would be hard pressed to find someone in NZ who hasn’t heard of it. Same for curry. Also the whole concept of woke and non-woke is very dated. The fact that Seymour is using this terminology shows just how out of touch he is. And I’m a boomer!

I just can't help thinking about all those non-recyclable plastic sandwich containers finishing up in the landfill. Schools will have to invest in bigger rubbish containers I guess, and pay to have them emptied.

In July 2023, Treasury published a report on the food in schools program that found:

    1. As many as 10,000 lunches a day are left over.

    2. no evidence of impacting attendance or benefiting ākonga Māori

    https://www.thepost.co.nz/nz-news/350034716/10000-healthy-school-lunches-leftover-each-day-critical-treasury-report-finds

I hope the new scheme has more success.

I hope any new scheme provides nutritious food for more hungry kids – time will tell.

Minister using outdated information to justify cutting school lunches
      [9 April 2024]
The Associate Education Minister David Seymour is quoting a highly negative Treasury report on the Healthy School Lunches Programme to justify cuts, despite new evaluations that paint a much more positive picture.

CPAG Thrilled Healthy Lunches Stay, But Asks Why So Many Are Going Hungry [8 May 2024]
One in five children in New Zealand live in homes where food runs out.

That number is higher, around 40 percent or two in five, for children who are disabled, Māori and Pacific Island and those living in geographically deprived areas.

It is unhelpful for Mr Seymour to describe healthy food as an extravagance, when this should be the benchmark we are striving for for all of our children.

Those hot school meals look fantastic – a far cry from the lunchbox crispbread and cheese I enjoyed in primary school. At high school, I occasionally bought a Ski yogurt and a Big Ben or apricot cream pie from the tuck shop for lunch – happy days.

"What worries me is that for many children from low-income families, the school lunch may be the only good food they know for sure that they'll get today, because their mums and dads are struggling to pay the rent, the power and all the other bills, so they're cutting back on food."
      https://bryanbruce.substack.com/p/david-seymour-please-watch-this-clip

Worries me too, and I haven't gone hungry for many years. I wonder if it worries Mr Seymour, who seems more concerned about the fiscal risk of 'woke' food in schools.

Meanwhile, our CoC govt is far more worried about budgeting for billions in tax relief to landLords, who must be absolutely starving! Warped priorities, stemming from greed, and a genuinely disturbing empathy deficit, imho.

"Those hot school meals look fantastic –"

It must be a matter of tastewink.

"Some o'f it just really isn't nice and I've often looked at it myself and thought, yuck!" Ollie's indifference towards the school lunches is not unique, with large amounts of food waste allegedly being thrown out each day across the region.

Intermediate student, Naki, said his Northland school had been receiving school lunches for around a year and a half. He claimed the lunches were hit and miss, with students often complaining about lunches being 'gross, stale, soggy, dry and tasting yuck'.

Demand for food in schools will soar once Seymour's new scheme is in place. And kids, that means packets of corn chips, and maybe even a peanut butter sandwich – white bread only wink

          We reject woke food ideology.
We fight the woke food in the legislature,
we fight the woke food in the schools,
we fight the woke food in the corporations
          — we will never, ever surrender to the woke food mob,” he said to cheers at his victory party.

Choice – back to school for you then wink

NZ (public) schools are where woke food goes to die!

Seems one of the foods missed off the David Seymour Woke/NotWoke list is Gruel. (for those difficult children mind)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gruel

And maybe there might be a work component incorporated for same?

After all, those brats must surely earn their keep…..while also learning the facts…of life. And their place in it.

Anyone who voted for and/or supports ACT would IMO be supportive.

Charles Dickens would recognise them for who they are….The New Victorians.
