The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...

One of my personal hot-buttons around traumatic brain injury. This links to a study I recall from about a decade ago that concluded around 90% of everyone in NZ prisons for a violent offense had some form of concussion.
64% of inmates, compared to 2% of the general population.
Yup, thanks for the updated linky. The exact number probably depends a fair bit on the threshold definition for TBI used by any given study … but whichever way you paint it the correlation is ridiculously high.
Also many inmates are not convicted for violent offenses.
My SO tells me that the number of violent offenders who came to the notice of child protection agencies in the first year of their lives is way up there – 80/90% .

Meth seems to be the growth stimulant in gang recruitment.
O'Reilly said older gang members, "who grew up in the boys homes and went through the gang wars of the 1980s" knew the consequences of confrontation and tended to be "more amenable to dialogue and logic".
"[Newer members] seem to be guys in their 20s and 30s, who are probably employed, who have probably had a reasonable life, but who got engaged in the meth scene and attracted to the bling and social media world.
"They don't particularly feel accountable to anyone, so the old networks where you could ring each other up and get around the table and have it out, that doesn't work anymore.

Intimidate the gangs, surge policing firstly, with zero tolerance to any minor offence.
Anyone else find it disturbing that Australia is checking at the boarder for Coronavirus, but we aren't?
Puts hand up.
Currently the affected city in China is Wuhan. Unlike Australia (and Canada) there are no direct flights from there to NZ. We won’t need to screen at NZ airports unless the virus becomes more widespread in China.
Funny how the US does not have a trade war with the Caymans.
