Making a major infrastructure deal happen takes years of planning, exceptionally qualified people on all sides, and in New Zealand it takes about ten years of your life. Until now.

What it now requires is the ability to draft a proposal just far enough that it’s shiny enough for a bank, promises just enough to investors, and quiet enough that you can wait out a Labour government so you can just  have a chat with Shane Jones, Chris Bishop and Simeon Brown to legislate the entire thing.

In case you’re wondering who’s been waiting out the last Labour government’s death out so they could Ta Daah reveal what they’ve been fairly secretly working on, this is who they are:

Do not think for a moment that all of this lot invented major infrastructure proposals in the 6 months since the 2023 election.

For everyone else who fought for years sometimes decades either to oppose or propose a massive project, poring through submissions, organising supporters, sustaining the confidence of your backers and designers and lawyers and funders through the massively democratised piece of consultation called the RMA, worry no more those days are gone.

A set of deals this big will reshape our country’s landscape as much as Julius Vogel’s nationbuilding projects in rail and irrigation, or the electricity grid and dam rollout across the Waikato River and Clutha River under the Public Works Department+Electricity Department+Ministry of Energy, or indeed Muldoon+Birch’s Think Big projects. The multi-billion Provincial Growth Fund appears to have been just a practise run.

This government has no economic plan other than stripping away resistance, exploiting resource with little constraint, and sustaining a wilful ignorance of consequence.

And to say the quiet part out loud, all those entities listed will have been planning their deals in secret, backchannelling to the Nats and NZFirst, waiting for this day.

  1. Should we be concerned that District Councils, despite not yet knowing the final form of the Fast Track Approvals Bill of Parliament, have been shoulder tapped for quick fire approvals?

A quick look at the list picked up Whakatane and Buller District Councils.

Add Marlborough DC, Nelson CC and Westland DC.

Port of Tauranga and Talleys give one pause as well.

  2. Tony Veitch 2

Some enterprising journalist (as opposed to a churnalist) should match that list with CoC donors.

To start the ball rolling, Bishop received thousands in donations from Winton.

And surprise, surprise, Winton is on the list!

If that is not corruption, we need another definition of the word!

So that's what Santana are doing now…

CNI Iwi Holdings Limited (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngāti Manawa, Tuwharetoa (Bay of Plenty), Ngāti Whakaue, Raukawa, Ngāti Whare, Te Arawa)

Interesting , back when I was a youngish silverculture worker ( planting ,pruning and thinning) cni formed got cosy to fletchers (dirty scum fletchers) and under cut every other contractor and forced them out of the bush, .

  5. Patricia Bremner 5

They will mine under Waihi Town Hauraki, and the Coromandel on shifting land.

Today Bayly made it easier to borrow…. part of this?

Don't read too much into it. Anyone with enough clout to get on this list probably doesn't borrow from the same banks you do

It must take a very big barrel to hold that much pork…

What annoys me more than what this government is doing is how brazen they are at doing it.

Like when Rogernomics came in, but people were more trusting of politicians then.
