I think I can safely speak on behalf of all of the Standard when I offer my condolences to those who have lost family and friends in today’s tsunami. We forget sometimes that we are a pacific island nation but the grief that is being felt throughout New Zealand tonight reminds us exactly how much we are culturally, economically and familially bound together with our pacific brethren.
And as Carmel Sepuloni has said over at Red Alert this will ripple throughout New Zealand’s Pacific community, not just emotionally but financially as Pacific New Zealanders struggle to support their families in the islands while bearing more than their share of the recession here as well.
While this tragedy will hold the headlines over the next few days it will be over the next few weeks and months that the support will be needed. I don’t doubt that the political community will pull together to make sure that support comes.
Yes, our thoughts are with the proud people of Samoa.
