You’re invited to the first Auckland Drinking Liberally event – 7.30pm next Wednesday night (2 July) at the London Bar with special guest speaker David Slack.
Drinking Liberally brings together people from across the left-leaning wing of the political spectrum for discussion, debate and, well, drinking.
The first Auckland event will take place from 7.30pm Wednesday 2 July in the London Bar, corner Queen and Wellesley Streets, Auckland City. Probably park at the leaky Aotea Square Civic carpark.
Further events will take place on the fourth Wednesday of every month. The next one will be on the 23rd of July depending on the availability of a speaker.
Well known blogger/author/radio commentator/all-round-nice-guy David Slack will be our first speaker. David says he’ll be talking about ‘New Zealand the way you want it’.
For more information visit www.drinkingliberally.org or join the ‘Drinking Liberally NZ‘ Facebook group.
Looks like Auckland is finally catching up with Wellington. Left-leaning Aucklanders should be able to show their social traits are at least as good as the capital village.

Try Joe Hendrens take Drinking Liberally Auckland and Auckervegas. I particularly liked the changes to my graphic. They really need to get one going there in Christchurch as well – too serious 😉
The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...
The server will be getting hardware changes this evening starting at 10pm NZDT.
The site will be off line for some hours.
Presumably drinkers from South Auckland are invited, too…. 😉
Cool graphic. They’ll have to make one specifically for Wellington.
Ah too many Steve’s..
Steve: A little work with PaintshopPro last night. I was trying for the bridge – but it really didn’t fit well with the image.
and Steve: Yes all of Auckland is welcome.

It sure was.
I’m just waiting for someone to start one up in Christchurch – or buy me a flight to Wellington.
/me is a poor student 🙁 .
it: The one up here started with a three of us meeting in a pub (I was dragged there) and spun out from there into who can we draft. That was largely done by e-mails.
Now there is a little e-mail group running at the back end and I’m avoiding getting too much into it because
a) I’m known to be anti-social and would probably depress
people (apart from trolls).
b) I had a very full voluntary calendar before The Standard.
Now it is ridiculous.
I’d expect that at some point the bods with people networks in ChCh will get involved. Go and kick them into action 🙂
Oh bother, Ijust checked my diary and I am entertaining two women that nighrt. I would bring them along, but they are right wingers.
TomS: That is ok, bring them along anyway. The beer doesn’t care.
Otherwise the next one is only a few weeks later. Looks like they might have the speaker for that one lined up already according to the e-mail.
Is David Slack speaking about Bob Jones’ vision for New Zealand?
[lprent: Don’t ask me – ask him. The rules are similar to what is done for the posters here. They pretty much write what they like – I’ve only interfered once and that was because the post had dropped into pure satire.
As I understand it, the topic is what David Slack said he’d talk about – what he means by it is up to him.]
Thanks for this Lynn, and the great graphic which I have snaffled to use in my own promotion post 🙂
[lprent: You’re welcome]
“Left-leaning Aucklanders should be able to show their social traits are at least as good as the capital village.”
So is this a night for liberals, or only lefties.
And don’t give me the garbage that only lefties are liberals.
MikeE: Probably depends on behaviour – just like this site.
It is a ‘public’ area. But I’m pretty sure that dragging along a megaphone or a heckling chorus would initiate a reaction from the bar owner and staff. Apart from anything else they’d be worried about the reaction of other parts of the audience. Besides – it is likely to upset the poker players.
Normal argumentative discussion plus the requisite drinking would probably keep the bar owner happy.
It started in America so it’s the American use of the term liberalism. Modern (left) liberalism, basically.

They seem like a pretty cruisy bunch though so I’m sure you’d be welcome.
I won’t be able to make it, but please could somebody (on my behalf) make a toast to George Carlin (one of the greatest liberal comedians of all time) who we sadly lost this week. 🙁
