India: Ignorance at a distance

Written By: - Date published: 11:37 am, October 3rd, 2010 - 8 comments

It’s been pretty painful watching the media coverage of the Delhi games buildup over the last few weeks. What a lot of xenophobic nonsense we’ve been served up.

McCully backs down – for now

Written By: - Date published: 7:20 am, July 17th, 2010 - 10 comments

Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully says “we don’t need to have winners and losers here” but he has had to bow to the decision of the ARC to keep at least one of the sheds on Queen’s Wharf. While this may appear to be a change to the construction of “Party Central” it is […]

Williams and Haden

Written By: - Date published: 1:06 pm, July 11th, 2010 - 6 comments

Minor bits of “people news” this weekend. Andrew Williams has thrown his hat in to the ring for Supercity Mayor. And Andy Haden has finally been fired resigned from his role as RWC Ambassador (exit stage right, still blaming the media).

Should’ve done it before, John

Written By: - Date published: 2:59 pm, July 9th, 2010 - 44 comments

It seems John Key is now belatedly wading in to look at whether it’s at last time to cut Andy Haden loose as a Rugby World Cup Ambassador. Apparently it was ok for Haden to talk about “darkie quotas” in the Crusaders and still remain a PR face of our nation, but now Haden has […]

Socialist football

Written By: - Date published: 1:16 pm, July 8th, 2010 - 32 comments

I thought Germany were going to power in to the finals – but Spain had other plans! Funny old game. According to football legend John Barnes the best football teams are socialist in nature. They play for each other, and individual brilliance is often subservient to the common good…

All Whites game 3

Predictions anyone?

Go the All Whites!

Public holiday on All Whites win?

Written By: - Date published: 12:28 am, June 24th, 2010 - 27 comments

Asked if a win against Paraguay should warrant a public holiday, John Key replied “Damn fine idea. I want the country to enjoy this. They’ll be dancing all over the place”. Trevor Mallard has taken up the cause and will ask Parliament’s permission for it to debate a Bill that will create a one-off public holiday on Friday if the All Whites win. There’s strong public support.

All Whites game 2

No, I’m not staying up for it. Have fun, those of you who do! Guess I’ll be kicking myself if the All Whites pull off a miracle…

So – anyone else sitting up watching the game? (This thread a politics free zone!)

John Key to Report on All Whites Game?

Written By: - Date published: 2:05 pm, June 9th, 2010 - 18 comments

So John Key is going to get to fly over and see the All Whites at the World Cup. Maybe he could do a match report for Radio New Zealand whilst he’s there. The World’s biggest sporting event by far, the Football World Cup, features New Zealand for the first time in 28 years. Can Radio New Zealand afford to send someone to cover this major story for our country? No.

It’s not ok. It’s racist

Written By: - Date published: 9:42 pm, May 31st, 2010 - 33 comments

McCully, Key, listen up. The real problem with Haden’s comment isn’t using the term ‘darkie’. The problem is he thinks limiting the number of Polynesians in their team is a key to the Crusaders success. Something the Blues should imitate. Haden apologised to the ‘darkie’ line. Hasn’t apologised for the real racism. How much is he being paid by the government? Do we want a racist representative?

Couldn’t organise a piss-up on Queens Wharf

Written By: - Date published: 12:35 pm, April 14th, 2010 - 21 comments

John Key and Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully have been at their do nothing best ever since Key dazzled the media with his party central ‘vision’. As the days tick down, they still haven’t made any decisions, and the plans for Queens Wharf have become less and less grand. Now, they’re looking at just chucking up a big tent.

Money for photo ops, cuts to health

Written By: - Date published: 10:38 am, March 17th, 2010 - 24 comments

Just a quick question: Why is John Key giving $300,000 to the All Whites’ World Cup campaign when they’re already making a $6 million profit from the $10 million they get for qualifying? Why is there money for that while elder care and other value for money programmes are getting cuts? Looks like we’re paying for some more John Key photo ops.

World Cup TV fiasco

Written By: - Date published: 8:58 am, March 4th, 2010 - 18 comments

How’s this for insanity: the finals in the World Cup will be broadcast live on four free to air channels as well as Sky. That’s pretty much the definition of overkill and it has got to have cost a bomb, thanks to the Government’s disastrous handling of the issue.

That’s gotta hurt

Written By: - Date published: 9:27 am, February 5th, 2010 - 7 comments

The CTU is launching its “that’s gotta hurt” campaign against government cuts to ACC on the big screens at the Sevens today and the result is not what you’d expect from the normally rather earnest organisation. S

Talk about politics

Written By: - Date published: 11:21 pm, October 19th, 2009 - 8 comments

On RNZ’s Nine to Noon today Andrew Campbell rips the shit out of National‘s grotesque mismanagement of the Rugby World Cup fiasco and laments the lack of talent in the PM’s staff, all the while Matthew Hooton gently weeps. There’s also talk about how despite the ongoing cock-ups of this Government the polls are still […]

Beyond parody

Written By: - Date published: 5:05 pm, October 13th, 2009 - 13 comments

I was joking when I said all we need now is for Sharples to up the ante in the government vs government bidding war, but this government is truly beyond parody. “Just before heading into the House today Mr Sharples talked to reporters, and was clearly furious and openly critical of National. He called what […]

Beyond belief

Written By: - Date published: 12:39 pm, October 13th, 2009 - 23 comments

So, let me get this straight. Pita Sharples, treating his ministry’s budget like a personal slush fund, decided that TPK would give Maori TV $3 million to add to its bid for free-to-air TV rights for the Rugby World Cup. That extra $3 mil made Maori TV the front-runner to get the rights. Now, the […]

National: is there anything they won’t privatise?

Written By: - Date published: 4:03 pm, March 4th, 2008 - 17 comments

Burqa Bob wants to buy heartland rugby. In other news, Bill English plans to sell our sunshine hours to a Finnish consortium and Key has mooted flogging off our children’s laughter to the highest bidder. [Update: Kiwiblogblog doesn’t think it’s so funny]

May the best team win

I’m aware that I run the risk of being called a bad loser with this post but I’m going to do it anyway 🙂 It’s always struck me as a bit odd that in many games, soccer, rugby, tennis and so on, the outcome of a championship is often decided by a single game – […]

Congratulations France

Well that was painful to watch but good on France for really lifting their game. They defended strongly and took advantage when it counted. Let’s just hope that it makes winning here at home in 2011 that much sweeter.
