The link isn't up yet, but One News reports a Cabinet leak which did NOT come from the public service, and reading between the lines, was from an anti-ACT Minister or staffer.

The cracks are turning into fissures.

Interesting points from Graeme Edgler re MSM reporting that the police are investigating painting over the rainbow crossing as a hate crime,

New Zealand does not have a hate crime offence. There is a provision that means hostility to a group is an aggravating feature. To rely on it here, Police would need to be able to prove the offenders believed the crossing (or the Council?) has a sexual orientation.

"the police are investigating painting over the rainbow crossing as a hate crime,"

If indeed that is what the police has said, then attending a professional development day might be very useful. If however this is what the MSM said, I would not be surprised.

Yet some of the members of Destiny church, who did exactly the same i.e. painting over a rainbow with white paint on a road, will they get a police follow up?

All the while the real criminals in Gloriavale Christian Community are still doing what they do best: abusing girls, boys, women and men.

      It doesn't?

Can't claim their eyes were hurt by the brightness, they wear shades, right?

        That's not a legal argument.

I'll take Graeme Edgelers' opinion on the law as being sound. If he is right, then what are the police doing calling it a hate crime, which has specific meaning in NZ law?

I have no problem with people calling it homophobic, it's obviously motivated by anti-gay sentiment, But I do expect the NZ police to know the law and not misrepresent it.

More likely the offenders believed the crossing had a Satanic "orientation" – that's how twisted the situation is, imo.

In a similar case – the targeting of the 'pink church' on the West Coast – all the perpetrators were able to be charged with was intentional damage.

That case, was however, significantly worse -since direct threats were spray painted on, and it was an occupied building.
