“Having a Whale of a time”

In July 2011, John Key was on holiday in Maui “having a whale of a time” – and also on Q+A in New Zealand letting the world know that Phil Goff was briefed by Warren Tucker. So they do have the telephone in Hawaii.

Here’s what Key said to Guyon Espiner on Q+A on 24 July 2011 – while he was on holiday in Hawaii:

GUYON Did you brief Phil Goff?

JOHN  Phil Goff was briefed, yeah, that’s right.  I personally didn’t brief him, but my understanding from the director of SIS, Warren Tucker, is that he was briefed and he was shown the same note and report that I saw.

GUYON Is the file closed?

JOHN Yeah.  It closed on- I probably won’t tell you the day, but it’s closed.

Here’s what Key said to media today when queried about the contradictions between what Warren Tucker and Beverley Wakem wrote in 2011 and said today:

“All I can tell you is I was having myself a whale of a time on holiday in Hawaii but nothing to do with Whaleoil.”

I’ll be surprised if Key’s back on Morning Report tomorrow.

  2. Key is a fucking liar.

Is he lying about Phil Goff being a lier?

when the leader of the opposition gets brief from the sis he/she is not aloud to admit or tell anyone or take notes and no eyewitnesses in other words its top secret phi l never lied about being briefed he wasn’t aloud to tell anyone whether he had or not .John key broke the rules phi l Goff was hang out dry for following the law key is corrupt he must go

“my understanding from the director of SIS, Warren Tucker, is that he was briefed ”

And while he was away in Hawaii and this interview was all set up he KNEW that the OIA had gone out with Tucker talking to Goff.

For all the other versions by Tucker and Wakem to be true, would mean Key runs the government like he is the leader of Hamas, never having face to face meetings, no one knows where he is , or he never uses a phone to keep updated. Just in case the IDF comes “knocking ” on his roof. Unbelievable.

    • The lizard people communicate by telepathy.

    • karol 3.2

Goff said on Campbell Live tonight, that the evidence points to Slater being briefed on the OIA. It is more likely he’d have been briefed by someone other than the SIS, because the motivation was political.

If not the PM, Slater was most likely briefed by someone on the PM’s office. But, Goff said that, based on his experiences of working closely with a PM, if someone in the PM’s staff had done something like leak information about an SIS OIA, the PM would come down on them very hard – it’s pretty unheard of for someone in a PM’s staff, to decide on their own to brief someone on security matters, without the PM’s say so.

      • Olwyn 3.2.1

Yes, that has been on my mind, and I’m glad it came up in the Goff-Campbell Live interview. With regard to ALL of the released material, and this disclosure in particular, Key has at the very least condoned what has happened. This by itself says a lot. After all, look at how swiftly he dealt with Aaron Gilmore – for being rude to a waiter.

        • karol 3.2.1.1

The Campbell Live segment on it.

The article below the video includes this bit of gibberish from john key:

John Campbell caught up with Mr Key in Christchurch to ask for clarification about who knew what was released, when, why, and how it got to Mr Slater.

“Well I don’t know because I don’t work on those things, but I think what was released was simply the heading that there was a briefing that took place,” says Mr Key. “But at the end of the day I knew it was there and I knew he was briefed because he told me he would be.”

Does Key practice such mis-speaking in front of the mirror? Or does it come naturally?

          • Olwyn 3.2.1.1.1

I did see it, but thanks for writing that part down – I laughed out loud when I read it in print. Utterly garbled, but “at the end of the say” is still going strong.

His bit about hawaii must have been intended to suggest to voters he couldnt therefore have had a discussion with tucker about the sis plans. The q and a shows his holidays dont mean unavailable…

The lying and misleading goes on and on, and the bags under his eyes get deeper and deeper…

I was on holiday at the time,
At the time I did this crime,
This crime is not what you can see,
This crime only applies to me,
For leaky I just cannot be,
Even though I leak on you,
I leak on you yes that is true,
And when I’m finished I turn to,
Judith and she leaks some more,
Now our piss is at the door,
You will have to let us in,
So we can sin and sin and sin,
And fuck your country from within.

Confuse/deflect “In July 2011, John Key was on holiday in Maui “having a whale of a time”
Yes he said that but of course John Campbell’s follow up question might have been:
JC: Yes Mr Key. I understand that but did you have a discussion with Mr Tucker while you were on holiday?
JK: Why would I? I was on holiday far from the problems back in NZ.
JC: But did you have a discussion with Mr Tucker?
JK: I have had lots of discussions with Mr Tucker but look. This is all a Left wing conspiracy….

        • Anne 7.1.1.1

Curia is polling for the Nats? Of course. Lets see if Jonkey changes his tactics in the next couple of days. It’ll give an indication what the poll is telling them.

Btw, I was watching the stand-up with John Campbell this evening. I’m not joking when I say… I could have sworn his nose was slowly getting longer – and redder…

          • disturbed 7.1.1.1.1

Jonkey had a look of fight and terror in his eyes too.

When he came close to face John Campbell his eyes were so wild and piercing like angry with fear.

His mana is gone now, and a reactive shell is what we now see, hope N.Z. sees this change..

Did they ask for you by name or did they ask for the person with the next birthday or choose you in some other way?

  8. Alistair Connor 8

The litany of John Key excuses continues :
    “I don’t remember”
“I was on holiday in Hawaii”
“I was out to lunch at the time”

The odd thing is that nobody nails him on the elementary , fundamental “where the buck stops” doctrine. If he didn’t sign off, or get verbally briefed, on SIS matters, that means he delegated that task to someone in his office he trusted. And EITHER that person messed up and has to take the heat (the coward’s way out : blame a subordinate) OR Key takes responsibility personally.

Saying “Nothing to do with me” is worse than cowardly, it’s a lie.

  9. Alistair Connor 9

Let’s write the script, for Espiner or whoever gets to pose questions to Key.

“Prime Minister, is it fair to say that all matters relating to the SIS which are notified to your office at any given time, whether you are present or on holiday, are dealt with by someone you know and trust, and who decides whether you have to be notified personally or not?”
“Prime Minister, this being the case, do you think that person might have made an error of judgement in not notifying you of this OIA request which had been expedited in order to give information to a right-wing attack blog which had been denied to mainstream media?”
“Prime Minister, do you expect us to believe that you were’t informed of the matter by your staff because you were on holiday, but that you had time to comment the matter on Q+A on 24 July 2011?”

    • One Anonymous Bloke 9.1

Double-barreled questions with a bunch of clauses won’t cut it.

Worse, only the Serious Fraud Office can compel answers. When the media gets around to asking the right questions he will stonewall.

This may have been said elsewhere, but, am i correct that Tucker has retired? What the hell is he doing putting out press releases when there’s an official investigation going on, when he’s no longer involved? What capacity is he acting in? Private citizen/national party supporter?

The obvious inference is he’s a total fucking liar too, just trying to back Key in a tight spot. the written evidence clearly shows key was briefed.

    • disturbed 11.1

      +++++++++100% appleboy

Tucker can never be free of the hidden crime of cover up until he comes clean,

When the country goes down the gurgler he will be held to account as one who had a hand in our downfall, we will remember.

    • ianmac 11.2

Tucker was at home today working in his backyard but retreated inside when visited by the Campbell Live reporter. Silence.

    • Ross 11.3

Yes, Tucker has retired as SIS director, but I guess he could get a nice job if the Tories get a third term. I imagine the PM would have to show his appreciation to Tucker who’s been very loyal to National.

I don’t see why he identifies with them. When they went to his house today it was obvious that he did not live in Remuera.
