Any reason why The Standard feeds are no longer showing up in my Google Reader? Started happening yesterday.
Yes the reference to KIPP schools is a scary one when you read these: http://www.schoolsmatter.info/2012/03/why-students-call-kipp-kids-in-prison.html http://www.schoolsmatter.info/2012/03/former-kipp-student-remembers.html http://www.schoolsmatter.info/...
Banks and his campaign donations, bus driver getting murdered anti asset sales march-what does One News lead off with tonight. The death of a former All Black. Sure it's news but the lead story?
This may not mean much to some people but to me it's sad. The great drummer Levon Helm of The Band is in the last stages of his life.
One result of charter schools generally is a narrowing of the curriculum with the main focus being on literacy and numeracy and as important as these are, combined with a testing regime that determines ongoing funding and in some cases the very existence ...
While not entirely disagreeing with you on this when did you last read something positive about education in NZ. Both SST articles focussed on the negative. As a teacher it seems to me that there is a concerted effort by some to portray education in a ...
This and the article on truancy further on in the SST are just more evidence of the medias push to portray the negative stories about education in NZ, especially at a time when performance pay, suppossed poor teaching and charter schools are being so ...
"Judgement on the parents does little to foster the learning outcomes of their students. If the children come to school hungry than feed them rather than whine about the parents lack of parental skills. Its not for the school to make judgment on the ...
Also a lot of the RWNJ's wet dream: Teachers only paid when in front of children.
Of course the other piece of NACT's education"reform" is the whole charter school movement which will allow organisations such as Destiny to build and run schools on the public dime using inexperienced teachers that can not belong to a union and get paid a...
Charter School profiteering at it's worst. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2011/12/28/florida-gets-acquainted-with-ohios-master-of-charter-school-disaster Of course it won't happen here..... will it?
Tolley's a liar! http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10774036
Required reading on the subject http://www.schoolsmatter.info/2011/12/diane-ravitch-december-9-2011.html
Something not really touched on is the question as to who is going to teach in these schools. There's no way I would teach under these conditions even if they were paying more (highly unlikely) and I can't see any of the staff at my school doing so either....
This article may suggest otherwise and reflects a growing concern worldwide about the problems of charter schools. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/sep/10/sweden-free-schools-experiment?CMP=twt_gu
Not of any political or otherwise significance but the one band I hadn't seen but still wanted to are no more. REM call it a day. http://www.remhq.com/news_story.php?id=1446
Her father was a principal at a local intermediate here in HB too so that qualifies her!!! He was regularly writing to the local paper in support of NS till someone questioned his relationship to the minister. Haven't heard from him lately.
And of course once again the Dom Post goes into bat for Tolley and NS with it's editorial today. http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/comment/editorials/5456885/Editorial-Parents-have-a-right-to-know-about-kids It's those pesky NZEI union people and a "...
Ryall's statement also that if they have to pay these caregivers for overnight stays may mean teachers will have to be paid extra for going on school camps is both rubbish and a scare mongering red herring. Teachers are on a salary and get a camp allowance...
This week's Listener editorial has (surprise surprise) come down firmly in favour of the Maori Party in all this. http://www.listener.co.nz/
In this rugby-centric country and with the RWC looming how great is it to have the All Whites win team of the year at the Halbergs?
I also wonder what her reaction would have been had the school in question not been Auckland Grammar but say for example a middle of the road co-ed high school like Taradale High here in HB. Speaking with some secondary teacher friends it seems that the ...
“They will find that targeted professional development [for teachers and principals] won’t be available [to them].” Well so far the professional development surrounding National Standards has been a mess. The advisors taking it have only been one step ...
I was being modest. I know I do a good job because the appraisal system we have at school shows that. Not only that but the fact parents often ask to have their child in my class must say something. I also know when I haven't done a good job and work ...
A state secondary school not implementing NCEA and a state primary school not implementing National Standards in the interests of the children they are teaching are basically the same thing. For the Minister to condone one action but not the other smacks ...
She said New Zealand's education system gave schools the flexibility to offer students different options. So in the Primary sector that means I don't have to worry about following National Standards when I go back to school next week. And in related news ...
Once again this government backs the farmers ahead of the environment and DOC. http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/4569314/Ministers-step-in-on-DOC-lease Unbelievable.
Being a teacher I'd really like to know what sort of post modernistic bushwa I am trotting out because it doesn't seem to be part of what I'm teaching my class of 5 year olds.
