Good article and good point about rail Wild Katipo.
Probably the difference was Christchurch was an obvious crisis. Problems like a lack of housing could not be ignored -there was a political will to act. While in Auckland the housing crisis has been denied and there has been a lack of political will to act...
Excellent report by Bernard Hickey. I was pondering over the following facts earlier today. "Building consents stagnating in Auckland. https://www.interest.co.nz/property/86807/number-new-dwelling-consents-issued-has-trended-down-every-month-august-last-...
On the related issue of Jacinda doing well in the polls. I have talked to a few people and we all think it is not a problem. Andrew appointed her because he thought she would be a great communicator and that decision has turned out to be true. It is a ...
Labour has a lot of credibility with the non-trolls. For instance this Australian economist -so probably a neutral party considers Labour's housing superior and a real challenge to the government. http://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2017/02/nz-labour-throws-...
Yep by 2037 all the baby boomers will already be over 65 years old so this doesn't solve the problem of how to fund baby boomers retirement. Bill English tax cuts which he funded by stopping the contributions to the Cullen Fund means the baby boomers will ...
Gabby and Rob this Angry Andrew theme that rightwing trolls use is interesting, because everyone I have talked to who have had behind the scene contact with Bill English knows he has a tendency to go off on angry rants. This characteristic is so well-known...
Immigration and building consent numbers affect the estimated size of the housing shortage. It is a little hard to estimate the exact size of the shortage because it depends on assumptions about occupancy rates (Nick Smith is right about that) -which is ...

I agree that the Greens (and Labour) showed a lot of professionalism in establishing a good working relationship with the Labour party. But the concern is that so far there is no evidence it is working for the Green party. But by-elections are weird so ...
I agree this constant media speculation about Jacinda is just another way the media turns a good story about Labour into something that is negative and destabilizing for Labour. The objective outcomes of the by-election was that Labour and Jacinda achieved...
So in summary the race is tightening and there is everything to play for going into the elections.....
If housing is the main factor in your voting decision then you should vote Labour. At this stage Labour by far have the better set of housing policies. Leith Van Onselen the Australian economist writes about it here. http://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2017/02...
Also we need to accept for many renting is a long-term reality -even with extensive housing reforms many kiwis will spend all or significant parts of their lives renting. So renters should be given more security of tenure -they need housing that allows ...
Also it doesn't account for how intensification can be part of affordable housing reforms. It has the stink of 'not in my backyard'. The likes of David Seymour (C?) who only advocate for freeing up building restrictions on the periphery of our cities not ...
... affordable housing. https://medium.com/@brendon_harre/what-is-the-secret...
Michelle the government should get on and allow affordable homes to be built. Those houses can be State houses -we have a whole department called HNZ that has expertise and institutional knowledge on how to do that. Of course the government has spent 8 ...
Here is another good account of the 'there is not enough affordable homes being built' story. With the author saying the National party government might have to consider implementing there own version of KiwiBuild. http://www.interest.co.nz/opinion/85934/...
See my comment Antoine about you being full of shit.
Bullshit and misinformation. We have a housing crisis. Not enough affordable homes are being built. The numbers are quite clear. If you are not prepared to engage with the topic truthfully why should we bother engaging in debate with you. If you said that ...
Keith I think Labour's comprehensive housing plan is quite good. http://www.labour.org.nz/housing I would want a bit more information on infrastructure and more details on HNZ -State house building -exactly how many -what rate per capita -that sort of ...
Here is what the Salvation Army have to say about Housing in Auckland in their recent State of the Nation report. HOUSING AVAILABILITY Auckland is short of 18,000 houses for the past five years. Despite record housing building activity in Auckland, that ...
House building peaking in 1974 is interesting because that matches the last time we had population growth this fast. Check this out from http://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/population/estimates_and_projections/NationalPopulationEstimates_MRAt30Jun16....
Exactly AB
I think Julie Anne and Jacinda did well in this 20min joint interview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2EHJypH5Dg They focused on the issues of the day -infrastructure, transport, childhood poverty and housing. Giving us a good look at what a Labour/Green...

Try again Fisi. The basic fact is homelessness and unaffordable housing have increased because the immigration boom is bigger than building boom.
Actually here is the truth. In 2016 -Auckland built about 10,000 homes and Auckland's population rose by 45,000. So 4.5 new people per new home. Auckland average house occupancy is 3 so the building boom is not big enough to decrease the homeless numbers...
... found out. https://medium.com/@brendon_harre/housing-affordability-on-the...
Bullshit Fisiani -especially for Auckland -where the housing crisis is the worst. Auckland built more houses in 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2004. Read about it here, in an article titled -"Despite much noise from the Government, its efforts to ramp up Auckland ...
In 1946 New Zealand was short of houses for 26,000 families. This is what we did. https://www.nzonscreen.com/title/housing-in-new-zealand-1946/quotes Maybe we shouldn't reinvent the wheel and do that again? Maybe give it a new name? KiwiBuild sounds good...
