When Adam delved and Eve span, Who was then the gentleman? From the beginning all men by nature were created alike, and our bondage or servitude came in by the unjust oppression of naughty men. For if God would have had any bondmen from the beginning, he would have appointed who should be bond, and who free. And therefore I exhort you to consider that now the time is come, appointed to us by God, in which ye may (if ye will) cast off the yoke of bondage, and recover liberty.

John Ball was hanged, drawn, and quartered for giving that sermon during the Peasant’s Revolt of 1381.

Seven centuries later, we can say the words and keep our heads at least. But, damn, it feels like we’ve come little further.

Our society is still premised on the idea that an elite few are better than the rest of us and our institutions work to preserve their privilege.

We’ve got a Parliament where a majority of ‘our’ representatives will vote for the idea that a person can do the same work with the same skill but be paid less because of what kind of person they are, not the work they do.

And the choice to change is still ours.

A start would be the parties of the Left remembering that they are and must be parties of the masses, not parties ‘for’ the masses but run by the elite.

    Watching recent parliamentary “question time” (with no answers!) reinforces my conviction that if our parliament were a company, non-profit organization, school, extended family, or ANY sort of human association it would be deemed irreparably dysfunctional.

    The problem is, as we’ve seen over and over, is that ‘liberty’ is all very find and dandy to go rabble-rousing with, but what you end up with is ‘anarchy’, leading inexorably to the saviour dictator. Find a way of having order without control and you’ve cracked it.

    Until then the best we can hope to do is to keep those who would govern us honest, and that’s where we’ve fallen down.

        Why do you have so little faith in your neighbors? People have often found themselves in a situation similar to the one you describe. They usually have little difficulty figuring out who is the next most qualified person to carry on the task. And, they SUPPORT that person.

        What kind of horror stories did you grow up with? I have NEVER been in a riot, except ones started by the police using tear gas on peaceful demonstrators.

            You get the 500 signatures you need to register the party, get members of the standard to come up with a constitution and party list and I’ll stand in Ham West in 2014.

              Sorry, but it has to be with someone who has already established their credentials as being ‘above’ politics, which – gorj – rules out anyone recogniseably left or right.

              It would need to be someone able to convincingly say “a plague on all your houses’ – as Grillo did, and has been professionally for many years.

              Depressingly I cannot think of a single New Zealander who could do what Grillo did, tho’ Jackson could probably get closest.
