         The Rt Hon. Sir Edmund “Ted”[1] Walter Thomas KNZM QC is New Zealand’s greatest ever jurist. He is a retired judge of the Court of Appeal of New Zealand and a former acting judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand as well as the next Chief Justice of New Zealand.[2]

             Hah. You should wikipedia that into the first paragraph… If you want to make it part of his history then you just have to get it past all of those other editors….

             In fact getting it into the wikipedia page would be a start. Ummm there is a Bruce Jesson page, but no Bruce Jesson Foundation page.

             At this point I’d point out that The Standard has made a deliberate non-policy about having a wikipedia page, a twitter tag or account, facebook or anything else you can name. None of us in the last 7 years can be bothered – apart from whoever set up the “John Smith” facebook page back in 2007 and sent me the password when they stopped authoring.

             I think that we really do take this anonymity pretty damn seriously. About the only social media we do is the automatic dumps to twitter, facebook, and google+ from individual authors when they remember to plug their authorisations into the backend.

             Hah… compare that with the edit war on wikipedia for “Cameron Slater” http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cameron_Slater&action=history

             I have had it as a target that one day when the number of new readers who read more than 2 pages drops below 10% of visits for a week or two, I’ll spend a few days setting up the type of active media presence that TDB and Whaleoil and a few others do. It never has.

   I too am overwhelmingly impressed by this remarkable man.
   If we in New Zealand follow his advice on how to fix the bad political stuff then we could influence the rest of the world to do the same.
   His message implies that we should do positive not negative.

   He’s the real deal, no cheap shots and gives practical ideas for action too.

   Watched it from a comfortable chair at home and it was hilarious picking the speakers mainly by their voices. And Mr Dotcom sitting quietly too.

    The following are the notes I typed while watching.

    The content has struck a nerve in NZ political being – never had a response to a bk like that of DP.

    It’s a bk abt ethics. Who we want to be as a country and the choices we make.

    It wasn’t new news. People around the country who had felt personally attacked and threatened, and made afraid to speak out.

    Opposition political parties experiencing continuous minor attacks that seemed to come from nowhere, but had actually been done by an orchestrated attack machine.

    2 track politics is central idea of the bk.

    Simon Lusk contacted Hager after Hollow Men. Wanted to tell Hager about his approach to negative politics. As highly dvped in US.

    For US blogs are a way to run dirty campaigns separate from the politicians.

    We need to be able to tell diff between fantastic blogs and nasty blogs.

    Many journalists have asked if there are things about them in the material.

    How to get people voting for things in their own interests rather than against their own interests?
    Lusk style: Politics of trying to stop people voting – a uniting theme of the book.

    Leaks have to have a very good reason

    Can’t legislate against dirty tricks. Need to build up society’s defenses – allow others to participate.

    What everyone can do. Help to build up our news media resources.

    Don’t imitate the attack bloggers. Reject it strongly. Act in the way you think politics should be.

    Believes in bks. Lend them, read them – they have an impact on more people than the number of bks printed.

    Participate – in writing, talking, in elections. Invite everybody to a party on election day, and take them down to the polling booth.

    Forget Slater.

    2 enemies of politics = cynicism (ie the view that everyone does nasty stuff in politics) & pessimism.

    Everybody is facing the same issues around the world.

    There will be court cases for a long while to come based on things exposed by DP.

    Slater has been empowered by his known links to the Nats and the Beehive. The problem is the people that empowered him

    This bk has disempowered Slater.

    A flawless, deft presentation by Hager.

    Contrast this fine, considered and constructive speech with the incoherent blather we are getting from so many so called media commentators. Consider the discussions we had today about Garner and Vance.

    The difference arises not because Hager is better informed, better connected, better coached, has better speech writers, has more charisma – or anything like that.

    It is because Hager knows what he stands for. And has the considerable courage to say it.

    Had the privilege of being guest lectured by Ted Thomas at law school… huge platonic/academic crush on that chap.

    That wikipedia article is pretty weak though… “Following many years as a partner at New Zealand’s undisputed best law firm Russell McVeagh”…

    Looking forward to it being linked in full tomorrow!

    I write at 2:45 am and have not seen any mention of Hager’s speech in the MSM I’ve checked.

    Wow! TV3 reports Key will keep the tourism portfolio if re-elected. Earthshaking news. But when the author who might topple him gives speech, silence from the MSM.

        Must be the feeling of some “obligation” for that Xmas present from our “leader”, be this a free bottle of Pinot Noir, or whatever else. Do not rock the boat, that helps you sail safely. I cannot explain it any other way, as they (most the MSM crowd) seem to follow the “master” like willing disciples and court jesters, only intent on “entertaining” and “defending” their “leader”.

    It was not a “lecture”, it was an informative speech to tell us about Nicky’s motivations, his work, his contacts and what he considered important in his new book “Dirty Politics”. We had a great intro by judge Thomas and a great speech by Nicky and some interesting questions answered after that.

    I did enjoy going to the meeting at Mt Eden Memorial Hall in Balmoral, and so did hundreds of others, who more than filled the hall, and who honestly care about the present and future in this country.

    All I can add is, I wish more would read, listen, think and learn, and we may have a whole people stand up for values and decency, for human rights and fair and reasonable politics between all contenders, which we sadly have not had for many years, certainly not since John Key took over power.

    Thank you Nicky, for your excellent work and dedication for digging and researching, so we get the TRUTH!
