If I was at the manufacturing crisis summit this Friday, and if John Key was showing up rather than spending his time on Planet Key and claiming that manufacturing is doing “extremely well”, I would ask him this: How come when Hollywood calls, you drop everything and go; how come you arrest Dotcom for them and give them $50m a year for mostly foreign workers to film here; but when Kiwi jobs are being lost, all you have to offer is denials and the cold shoulder?

I know you state it for effect, but I am sure you know that John Key did not arrest Kim Dotcom. I am sure you know there is such a thing as police independence and an extradition treaty. The police can not simply ignore an extradition request from the US, they are legally required to act on it, and only the NZ police could actually make the arrest.

The difference between “your contract will not be renewed” and “if we want to drop your position you will get notice, a nice redundancy payout, and the option of redress if it was all a ruse and we put someone else in your job immediately after getting rid of you”.
ALl the ‘permanent’ jobs I’ve had have had one month’s notice. Only some have had redundancy options. In a recession nothing is that permanent. Like those 40k manufacturing jobs.
well if you want to get finicky, “permanent” is always a misnomer because everyone will someday die and companies will no longer exist, therefore the jobs will cease to exist.
But the security of having a “permanent job”, rather than several months of worry as to whether a contract will be renewed, counts for a lot. Not to mention that the permanent job will probably have redundancy payments, whereas the fixed term job just ends.

I know you have a mission to make job insecurity seem normal and acceptable, but even you know that there is a huge difference between permanent full time positions and casual temp positions.
As for giving NZ the opportunity to work in their own country this government, as have others, has just cut us out AGAIN. They have gone overseas with tourist promotion work we should have been doing.
