Manufacturing crisis

If I was at the manufacturing crisis summit this Friday, and if John Key was showing up rather than spending his time on Planet Key and claiming that manufacturing is doing “extremely well”, I would ask him this: How come when Hollywood calls, you drop everything and go; how come you arrest Dotcom for them and give them $50m a year for mostly foreign workers to film here; but when Kiwi jobs are being lost, all you have to offer is denials and the cold shoulder?

    Right on James!

      Because.

      1: He does not care
2: He is just following orders.
3: He will be out of here asap.
      4:

I’ll leave that for the next person.

        4: He is a loathsome lickspittle who sucks up to power and fame but scorns those he deems his lessers;
        5: His “blind” trust maybe has shares in the film industry;
        6: He is desperate for a biographical film to be made about him like that Will Smith number a few years back;
        7:

      • blue leopard 1.1.2

        7. He is not responsible for anything that goes on in NZ; he is merely the PM.
8.There is insufficient evidence to level any criticism over his actions….ever.
        9. It’s “Manufacturing a Crisis” (you put the a in the wrong place) this is entirely necessary to get Nzers compliant with my mates money interests.
        10.

      • PlanetOrphan 1.1.3

        10. It’s these memory pills the Doc gave me.
        11. He’s hoping most NZers die off before the next election.

    James,

I know you state it for effect, but I am sure you know that John Key did not arrest Kim Dotcom. I am sure you know there is such a thing as police independence and an extradition treaty. The police can not simply ignore an extradition request from the US, they are legally required to act on it, and only the NZ police could actually make the arrest.

Why does the Left keep complaining about the Hobbit deal? It was worth literally thousands of jobs.

    • prism 2.1

      wayne
You overlook the fact that police gave the wrong information to Security Dept. Police independently operating outside the rules isn’t what we want. John Key is immersed in the whole thing which gets murkier…

As for the Hobbit some people can’t help feeling that Peter Jackson has done well but hasn’t treated his NZ compatriots fairly.

    • Poission 2.2

Why does the Left keep complaining about the Hobbit deal? It was worth literally thousands of jobs.

Most were temporary and transients ie overseas. The decrease in rents in Wgtn is clearly evident,as the rental sector starts Dehobbiting

      http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/money/7787956/Rental-property-demand-falls

In the eastern suburbs in the higher value range rents have dropped a couple of 100.Lots of concerned property speculators there.Oh dear.

Casual temp jobs =! permanent secure jobs

      • insider 2.3.1

What’s permanent in this day and agae? Seriously.

        • McFlock 2.3.1.1

The difference between “your contract will not be renewed” and “if we want to drop your position you will get notice, a nice redundancy payout, and the option of redress if it was all a ruse and we put someone else in your job immediately after getting rid of you”.

          • insider 2.3.1.1.1

ALl the ‘permanent’ jobs I’ve had have had one month’s notice. Only some have had redundancy options. In a recession nothing is that permanent. Like those 40k manufacturing jobs.

            • McFlock 2.3.1.1.1.1

well if you want to get finicky, “permanent” is always a misnomer because everyone will someday die and companies will no longer exist, therefore the jobs will cease to exist.

But the security of having a “permanent job”, rather than several months of worry as to whether a contract will be renewed, counts for a lot. Not to mention that the permanent job will probably have redundancy payments, whereas the fixed term job just ends.

        • bbfloyd 2.3.1.2

US!! As in human beings you turd for brains!! the planet that we live on!! the generations alive now as children, and the yet unborn thousands of generations to come.

Whether it suits you to acknowledge the permanence of your own species, or not is irrelevant….

your opinions are the only thing that will fade into utter obscurity once the level of maturity required for sensible, realistic responses to serious issues becomes the norm, rather than a marginalised voice, pushed aside by the self interested, and insanely rapacious “aristocracy” of the corporate world…

Of course, you will continue to make a virtue of accepting the status quo, and making a virtue of being incapable of seeing past the “now” so that the traincrashes maintaining the status quo tends to lead us all to…as that is all national has ever done….THey have never seen their job as actually governing for the whole country…

Actually trying to fix the imbalances has always been the job of the labour party….always has been, and always will be, as long as enough people still cling to the past like some sort of obsessive security blanket…..

Thanks innie… your comment says volumes about tory attitudes, and gives people valuable insight as to what needs to be weeded out before we can ever truly start to develop in a sesible, sustainable fashion…

        • Colonial Viper 2.3.1.3

What’s permanent in this day and agae? Seriously.

I know you have a mission to make job insecurity seem normal and acceptable, but even you know that there is a huge difference between permanent full time positions and casual temp positions.

As for giving NZ the opportunity to work in their own country this government, as have others, has just cut us out AGAIN. They have gone overseas with tourist promotion work we should have been doing.
We need to fight for our right to be a thriving, working country – get as mad as the Ansett workers did when the airline turned to custard and we were blamed and blasted. They have some fire in their bellies and we need to have the same.

A contract for “the New Zealand Story” – the Government’s campaign to promote the country internationally – has been given to a mostly Australian design agency.
The local industry is in an uproar, calling the move ludicrous and an offence to New Zealanders.

Three government agencies called in August for expressions of interest from New Zealand firms “to develop a New Zealand country story”.
Almost 30 submissions were made, and five finalists were chosen.
The Herald learned last night that the contract was awarded to Principals, an Australian design agency which registered with the New Zealand Companies Office in February.

    For now I see
Peace to corrupt no less than war to waste

    -Paradise Lost

Slowly the poison the whole blood stream fills.
It is not the effort nor the failure tires.
The waste remains, the waste remains and kills.

    -Empson

Naturally, the workers are perfectly free; the manufacturer does not force them to take his materials and his cards, but says to them….”If you don’t like to be frizzled in the frying-pan, you can take a walk into the fire”.

  5. “The economy will create up to 170,000 new jobs over the next four years, the government said today as part of its Budget announcement.” 2:00PM Thursday May 19, 2011

Prime Minister John Key told TV ONE’s Close Up tonight that New Zealanders needed a plan for jobs, and that today’s Budget delivered that.

“New Zealand can’t keep borrowing money at $380 million a week. We can’t have New Zealanders exposed to high interested rates, New Zealanders need a plan for jobs.

“This is a budget that actually delivers that.”

Warning don’t eat before watching this
