There was once, a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, a democratic Galactic Senate, the ruling body of the Old Republic. It was inflitrated by those on the Dark Side of the Force, led by Darth Sidious – who eventually became Chancellor of the Galactic Senate, largely by buying over and otherwise controlling the votes in the Senate. Sidious even involved the Republic in a false war which he had actually engineered to act as a crisis which he could take advantage of to gain Emergency Powers.
By various acts of treachery including co-opting a powerful young individual (Anakin) from a strong party that would oppose his quest for power (the Jedi), Sidious managed to permanently dispose of that party as a viable opposition, once and for all. Or so he thought.
Sidious eventually dissolved the Galactic Senate (he may have done this literally…) and replaced rule through the Galaxy via the use of territorial Governors selected by him, subservient to the Galactic Empire that he created with himself as the Emperor.
Anakin served the Emperor as one of his senior captains, Darth Vader, helping to enforce the iron grip of the Empire around wayward and distant star systems, and hunting down the anarchic rebel forces which represented the last of the opposition to the creation of a truly peaceful and well ordered society.

Seems to be a common theme amongst scifi baddies. I watched the first episode of Lexx with His Divine Shadow last night with Lyn last night (recalled to me because of QoT’s banner). Somehow I don’t think this series will be a winner with Lyn. But she was rather glued to screen whenever there weren’t criminals suffering the RWNJ’s idea of them being useful (having organs graphically chopped out of their unproductive bodies so that RWNJ’s could live longer). I have no idea how this made it to US TV even on the SciFi channel.

Wouldn’t really recommend watching past the end of the 1st season. The show took a really bad turn, suffers from actor replacement issues and lacks any further narrative after the resolution at the end of the initial season.
