Nats planning to drive down our wages further

Written By: - Date published: 9:25 am, June 9th, 2011 - 32 comments

National’s election plan is becoming clear. They are going to put a lot of nasty stuff on the table and trust that people love Key’s smiling face so much they will still vote National. If they win, they will take it as a mandate to do everything they’ve said, and more. The latest election policy is more attacks on our work rights.

Better economic info

Written By: - Date published: 2:15 pm, June 3rd, 2011 - 7 comments

The CTU’s Economic Bulletin: The 2011 Budget was a victory of story-line over needs… The Budget has no plan to put right New Zealand’s social and economic imbalances, and does little to start cutting back the overseas private debt… The Budget of a thousand cuts put debt and deficits ahead of people’s needs and a plan for the future.

CTU research on minimum wage

Written By: - Date published: 10:28 am, May 25th, 2011 - 24 comments

The response to two recent posts here at The Standard have shown what a contentious topic the minimum wage is.  So it’s timely that yesterday saw the release of the CTU’s summary of research on Minimum Wage and Jobs.

Choosing to be poor

Written By: - Date published: 7:32 am, May 24th, 2011 - 24 comments

Prominent  scientist Sir Paul Callaghan thinks Kiwis are choosing to be poor.  I reckon he’s right too, but we probably disagree about the reasons.

Budget Protest at Parliament today

Written By: - Date published: 11:26 am, May 19th, 2011 - 54 comments

Unions and community groups don’t need to wait till after the Budget is read to know they’ve been screwed.  They’re gathering today at Parliament at 12pm for a protest rally – come along if you’re in town. I was talking to a union organiser today who said that one of her main worksites – politically apathetic most […]

Things Just Got Tougher

The CTU is launching a new campaign today as part of their ongoing Fairness At Work. Things Just Got Tougher is about the new employment laws that start today, April 1.

Sick April Fool’s Joke

Written By: - Date published: 7:18 am, April 1st, 2011 - 72 comments

Today National has a terrible April Fools for workers around Aotearoa: 90 day fire-at-will, reduced union access, sick notes after 1 day and minimum wage up a pittance. Workers are doing it tough already, and now National’s turning the screw.

Actors’ Inequity

Written By: - Date published: 10:43 am, February 14th, 2011 - 31 comments

Another piece of union-bashing has been quietly implemented. Before, when bringing in foreign actors, the burden of proof lay on the production company to prove the talent they were importing was truly required. Now, no proof is required. This undermines Kiwi actors and their unions. It’s all about punishing Actors’ Equity for the Hobbit fiasco.

Well, at least he kept one promise

Written By: - Date published: 8:43 am, February 2nd, 2011 - 36 comments

December 2007, John Key, speaking to Carolyne Brooks-Quan said: “We would love to see wages drop“. Key tried several conflicting excuses, including that he was talking about Australian wages (which became a mini-meme). But actions speak louder than words. Yesterday, we had more confirmation that wages have dropped under Key, except for union members.

1951

Written By: - Date published: 11:45 am, January 19th, 2011 - 74 comments

In 1951, New Zealand temporarily became a police state. Civil liberties were curtailed, freedom of speech denied, and the Government used force against its own citizens. This film tells the story of the infamous lockout of waterside workers and the nationwide strike which followed. The film won Best Documentary and John Bates was named Best Director, Documentary, at the 2002 New Zealand Television Awards.

Farrar’s pike river smears

Written By: - Date published: 12:09 pm, January 15th, 2011 - 136 comments

The National Secretary of the miners’ union has warned important evidence may be lost if Pike River mine is sealed.

For making that rational observation he’s been smeared by National Party blogger, David Farrar.

It seems the Nats don’t just want to seal the mine, they want to seal the whole issue and they’ll be quick attack anyone who raises any awkward points.

John “30-sec” Key…. smile and walk away.

Written By: - Date published: 8:33 pm, January 3rd, 2011 - 103 comments

The two significant things from the Herald interview: #1 The signalling by John Key of his willingness to step down. #2 The view of John Key that “essentially there is no money”. “There won’t be money for us and there won’t be money for Labour,” John Key. The significant thing about the first statement is, […]

Q&A on The Hobbit – Part 2

Written By: - Date published: 1:30 pm, November 3rd, 2010 - 52 comments

In a highly-charged debate like the Hobbit fiasco, it’s easy to lose sight of the real issue amongst the claims and counter-claims over petty details. In a second post that strips things back to what matters, Blue asks the big question: ‘how exactly did NZ taxpayers end up handing over tens of millions of dollars to Warner Brothers?’

Q&A on The Hobbit

Written By: - Date published: 11:30 am, October 28th, 2010 - 84 comments

The Right argues that an already settled labour dispute involving a small union somehow scared a multi-billion film company enough to make them consider abandoning the $100 million already invested in NZ. Blue has gone beyond the slogans and done some excellent research to answers our questions on what really happened.

An invitation to Warner Brothers to be up front

Written By: - Date published: 10:30 am, October 27th, 2010 - 10 comments

Wallace Chapman has a thoughtful Open Letter to the visiting Warner Brothers executives on his blog, inviting them to front up to the New Zealand public: We have a small segment called “Soapbox” and we’d just love you to come over and join us and speak your mind to camera for 60 seconds. We know […]

The sea-change on the left

Written By: - Date published: 1:59 pm, October 25th, 2010 - 41 comments

One of the strange things about helping to run a left blog like this is looking at the varied opinions of those on the left of the political spectrum, and then looking at the monolithic opinions that the right seem to have of the left. I was musing on this while reading Matt McCarten’s excellent Saturday article. Now you have to understand that Matt and myself are almost at the ends of the spectrum when it comes to politics on the left….

Labour Day: Thank a unionist

Written By: - Date published: 7:58 am, October 25th, 2010 - 142 comments

The Nats and their repeaters are trying to paint unions as some kind of public enemy.  How can we be a public enemy when we are the public?  Unions are just people.  Unions exist to work for our rights.  Rights like the eight hour working day, the origin of the celebration of Labour Day.  If you enjoy decent conditions at work, if you’re enjoying your long weekend, why not thank a unionist!

National day of action for work rights

Written By: - Date published: 12:51 pm, October 20th, 2010 - 115 comments

Thousands of workers are now leaving their work places to attend one of the 27 protests taking place today from Kaiatia to the Bluff against National’s draconian anti-worker policies. This one could be big. This is the day that Kiwi workers stand up and say that they have had enough of this government attacking our wages and work conditions. Update: 5-6 thousand at Parliament.

Extremist NZ Actors Equity demands outrageous fortune

Written By: - Date published: 8:24 am, October 3rd, 2010 - 17 comments

Wondering who Actors’ Equity are and what they do? Well here’s a video from AE explaining just that. Actors’ Equity also have a good website that lays out their position in Peter Jackson’s Das Hobbitski fiasco. It’s been funny watching the msm contort itself while struggling with its rarely conflicting predilections for both celebrities and […]

One of these things is not like the other XII

One of these things is not like the other, One of these things is not quite the same. Can you guess which one is not like the other, Can you tell me before I finish the game?

Some advice for Actors Equity

Written By: - Date published: 11:45 am, October 2nd, 2010 - 32 comments

The Hobbit dispute is being run to a very familiar playbook.

Let’s have a look at the employers’ tactics and what the union can do to counter them.

From Hounds to Foxes

As you sit there reading this, think about how industrial action is growing across the country – Secondary teachers, Junior Doctors, Radiographers, State Servants, Actors. There is a lot more to come as National and business try to force wages down. Do you want to wait for them to come for you?

A brief point on union meetings

Written By: - Date published: 1:11 pm, October 1st, 2010 - 46 comments

Peter Jackson’s in the paper today whining about being denied entry to a union meeting.

There’s a really simple reason for that – union meetings are for union members, not for employers.

Nats back Jackson over Kiwi workers

Written By: - Date published: 8:48 am, September 30th, 2010 - 112 comments

Arts Minister Chris Finlayson has backed the Hobbit producers’ refusal to negotiate with Kiwi workers.

He’s citing a Crown Law opinion that backs Jackson’s claim he can’t negotiate with workers collectively.

But he’s deliberately asked a very narrow question to get the answer he wants – an answer he’s using to back foreign big business over the rights of Kiwi workers.

MEAA fisks Jackson tirade

Written By: - Date published: 8:19 pm, September 27th, 2010 - 53 comments

The MEAA has responded to Peter Jacksons Tirade.

And it looks like he’s not been very straight-up about how the situation got to this.

A suggestion for students

Written By: - Date published: 10:39 am, September 27th, 2010 - 154 comments

The voluntary student union membership bill is based on a false premise, and a reflexive tory hatred for the word “union”.  I have a suggestion for students…

Union boycotts Jackson

Written By: - Date published: 7:51 am, September 27th, 2010 - 99 comments

Film workers in New Zealand have been exploited for years

Now their union is standing up for them.

And Sir Peter Jackson is throwing a tantrum about it.

Teachers strike tomorrow

Written By: - Date published: 1:42 pm, September 14th, 2010 - 13 comments

Here are the reasons for tomorrows strike from a member of the PPTA (Post Primary Teachers Association) in a guest post.  The Ministry of Education has rejected them all.

You’d have to expect the spinners for the government to carefully ignore these issues in favour of their usual simplistic meaningless dogwhistling messages. That is the level they’d prefer that kids are educated to.

Request for Information

Written By: - Date published: 6:46 pm, September 13th, 2010 - 9 comments

Teachers are striking on Wednesday.

But there’s not a lot of information about why.

That’s an information void the government will fill if the PPTA doesn’t.

Christchurch workers

Unite Union’s Christchurch office has been flooded with phone calls and text messages from worried workers in post-earthquake Christchurch.

McCarten not going down without a fight

Written By: - Date published: 10:30 am, September 5th, 2010 - 33 comments

Almost as an aside, Matt McCarten has announced that he has the “killing kind of cancer” in his column today. Matt is one of the lions of the Left. His union, Unite, has defied the skeptics to become a real success story. Temp and low-paid workers have found an avenue for collective action, and learnt they can win. Matt makes it clear he’ll never flinch from fighting for the workers. Good on ya, mate, we’re with you.
