“The kaiwhakahaere of the New Zealand Nurses Union says work is now needed to improve pay and conditions for nurses employed by Māori and iwi providers.
Nurses and midwives employed by district health boards have voted to accept a new collective contract, after going on strike for a day last month.
As well as pay rises of up to 16 percent for some nurses, the deal includes 500 extra positions in an attempt at improving safe staffing.
Kerri Nuku says nurses employed by Māori and iwi providers, those in primary health care, aged care and private hospitals also deserve to be highly valued for their contributions to health care.
Work needs to start now bringing them up to that level.”
