Pragmatism, if the church in Germany does not want to loose anymore faithful and with them taxes they need to modernise and be accepting of others in faith.
The German church – catholic and lutheran – receive money from the government via taxes collected on workers. The only way to not pay church tax is to leave the church formally and once that is done you can not marry in the church nor will the church bury you. Stuff like that. But many people do that, as it can be quite a bit of money that is taxed away to the churches. No taxation without representation would be the easiest way to putting it. And then of course also the believe that if mankind is made in the image of god, that must also then apply to the rainbow community.

There is 'the church' and then there are the priests and nuns on the ground, and as someone who grew up in a convent with a bunch of hippy nuns i can guarantee that not all bavarian priests and nuns are like their church would like them to be.
But i think that was these priests and clergy are doing is the only way to force the RCChurch into the future, if they want to continue being a church. And i would love for my sister to get her blessing for her marriage in church. Just because.

I did not mean Luther as a the 'turbulent priest' but Thomas à Becket who also followed his particular truth. But it was a good story and I had not known much of Luther's particular struggle with the Vatican enforcer. Interestingly, my secondary school motto denied Luther's 'by faith alone' being 'Fide et Opere'- by Faith and Good Works. I always liked HMC's acceptance of the need to perform good work, socially just and proper actions informing my own politics. Some good from all that boyhood schooling and upbringing.

Becket a 'priest' ?
He was Henrys Lord Chancellor before his nomination as Archbishop of Canterbury, he was ordained the day before his consecration, so his religious background was not much more than of the few at the time who had an education.
In the play "Becket", Henry 11 is quoted as saying"Who will rid me of this trurbulent priest?" So three knights did. On the steps of Canterbury cathedral altar. Becket in the film played by Richard Burton memorably says to one of his executioners, "Sheath thy sword, Roderick, before you impale your immortal soul upon it."
