Staff management is not always easy, accepting that others may have more expertise than you have, say in staff management, can be difficult for some.
Working with professionals we used to say 'XXYYY (professionals) can do anything as their training equips them to be and do anything they want to do…..be a brain surgeon, design buildings, be an archivist, be a librarian…….'
While we made a joke about it, there were enough of the specialists who thought this way or who thought they were better than generalists for the quip to get a weak laugh.
And in high pressure environments such as Parliament, weaknesses in staff management can be exacerbated. Working there, for good MPs or Ministers is much more a team game than the hierarchical structure that some professionals such as Drs are used to working in. Some professionals can be very threatened by people who have more knowledge about topics than they have.
All in all a sad state of affairs.
In relation to the bye-election – just like Uffindell in Tauranga, he's an electorate MP – so only responsible to the voters in the electorate.
All the party could do would be to expel him – from the party, not from Parliament – at which point he'd simply be an independent MP.
He has zero chance of being re-selected as the Labour electorate candidate for 2023 (or earlier) so nothing to gain from resigning and forcing a bye-election.
IIRC, only Peters has ever done this (resigned from Parliament to force a bye-election – which he then won as an Independent).
I don't think it's about political/electoral considerations now. It looks like Sharma simply doesn't want to be in the building any more.

There's been an attempt to change parliamentary culture, and there are still issues and parliamentary politics is still at times brutal. Both might be bullies. Or bastards. The new collective employment agreement signed between Parliamentary Service, the PSA and E tū redefines ‘event’ to no longer mean staff lose their jobs every election, and removes the Breakdown in Relationship clause that gives MPs the ability to sack at will. These changes will take effect with the arrival of the 53rd Parliament.
New systems have been introduced to help organise for staff to take time off, and MPs have lost their ability to directly nominate candidates into vacant roles without a full recruitment process.
Roles and pay scales have been amended to properly compensate experienced staff for their skills and length of service, and a triangular relationship agreement will be signed between Parliamentary Service, the MP and the staff member."

Was Muller bullying his staff? Not as far as I am aware. And frankly there are few things that irritate people who live with mental health issues than someone who spins theirs as an excuse for shitty behaviour.
