Anyone prepared to do a post on the relative merits of democracy for developing human society when compared to the Chinese and Saudi leadership changes, versus say Europe and the U.S.? Must be time to scratch that itch.

  4. Ad 4

Prime Minister-to-be Ardern is signaling one of the first pieces of electoral business is to bring in a law banning foreign property purchases by speculators. Looking forward to it.

    • ianmac 4.1

But of course such restrictions would make very little difference to the housing market because Key, Joyce and Estate agents assured us that foreign buyers were less than 3% of the market. And they must be right, right?

    • BM 4.2

And if China or South Korea says nope?

      • Ed 4.2.1

So end the free trade agreements,? is this what Peters is on about when he says he sees dark times ahead.

          • Ed 4.2.1.1.1

Do the Chinese or Koreans allow us to buy land or houses there if we are not residents?
Fair trade – not free trade.
            Aotearoa Is not for sale.

            • BM 4.2.1.1.1.1

That’s irrelevant that’s what they negotiated with us, why would they want to remove that condition?

I have to ask why was that offered in the first place? or was that a condition both China and South Korea demanded, the right to buy NZ property, agree to that or no free trade deal?

              • Ed

I don’t care what the traitorous Nats signed away.
We are taking our country back.

                • BM

The China free trade deal was done under Clarks Government nothing to do with National.
That rather set the bar, if China got that right South Korea would want it as well.

Direct your anger at the previous Labour government.

              • Cinny

                What would you suggest BM?

                • BM

We’re rather snookered too be honest, we either cut ties and take a massive economic hit or we learn to live with it.

It’s a double-edged sword, China’s now our second largest trading partner and will soon become our number one we really need them, the downside is they’ll eventually end up owning us

                  http://m.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/industry_sectors/imports_and_exports/trade-china-tripled-decade.aspx

Gaining control via trade is something China’s been doing for a very long time.

                  • China’s now our second largest trading partner and will soon become our number one we really need them, the downside is they’ll eventually end up owning us

We don’t need them at all and we most definitely shouldn’t let them become our owners.

                  • Cinny

Gaining control via trade is something China’s been doing for a very long time.

                    That’s for sure.

Maybe not so snookered, personality has much to do with negotiations, as does respect. It’s easy to give respect to those who want the best for their countries citizens, such as NZ not wanting to sell as much land to offshore buyers etc. I doubt very much that it will end in drama.

BM who do you think should be the new speaker of the house? Am guessing Carter will be a gone-burger.

      • If they’re really concerned they can drop the FTA. We won’t hold it against them.

    • Ed 4.3

      Great news

    • weka 4.4

The devil is in the detail. Does it include rural land? Will it ban land ownership from overseas by people that aren’t speculating?

    • The Chairman 4.5

“Prime Minister-to-be Ardern is signaling one of the first pieces of electoral business is to bring in a law banning foreign property purchases by speculators. Looking forward to it.”

      Are Australians still exempt?

One could circumvent those law’s by saying that they are aloud to by land but only a small amount and we could be still compliant may be not sure ?????????????
Congratulations to Nanaia Mahuta who has earned Her place in OUR new Government and she is a great leader and roll model for all OUR moko Ki ora

I felt sorry for the Japanese in the weekend with their snap election and TINA, as a result it’s going to be full on military minded. Have never been a believer in preparing for war to ensure peace.

It’s just like a big pissing contest really.

North Korea fascinates me, I often wonder if their leader has been raised in and lives in an alternative reality, Truman styles.

  6. cleangreen 6

    Was that mine?????

Shit it looks to bloody big, – Bugger!!!

  7. Ed 7

    Happy Days

  8. Nick 8

Joyce assessing the budget numbers just sounds so ridiculous now. Anything he says is just tinged with hmmm is this another one of those 8 billion dollar missing holes….credibility factor 0

  9. Patricia Bremner 9

Practical problems of getting elected have hit the Greens. I know they have support here.

They need each member to give $100 donation to clear their costs.

Now I’m a member of Labour but I plan to make a small donation, as many crumbs make a loaf.

They are an important part of the coalition, so rally round folks.

  10. Philg 10

Yes Patricia, but a political system that depends on the biggest donor is fatally flawed Imo Think KDC,Gareth Morgan, Alan Gibbs, Doug Myers, National…

  11. Elephant in the Room 11

Mr Dilbo Baggins aka Nevapay Mr Fixit by breaking it and Jackshit of all trades with oversight of MBIE largesse /extravagant wasteful spending (like he needed hair curlers or has he ever heard of UBER for Christ sake)
He’s One big dildo that just dicked his own Party with his strategy to snuff out Winston and NZF by cutting out the middle man and arrogantly thinking everything National does is pretty legal and 44.4% constitutes a majority FFS (not the last time anyone looked). Talk about an Eminesque walking disaster behemoth.
Add the Sky City deal he negotiated thats just dropped Fletchers in the poo the failed economics papers (professional student dropkick) and pre-Tertiary Student loan Regime his government subsequently brought in and his inability to read a spreadsheet or financial illiteracy and his government handout to bailout MediaWorks he once owned and made him a multi millionaire you got to wonder how “Stevie Wonder” rose to ex Minister of Finance and now his shovel for digging himself and National into oblivion has been confiscated we can thank Winston for that. At least in Opposition he cannot inflict anymore damage on the Economy and fellow Kiwis with his reputation in shreds and “Mud”. Time to lose yourself Stephen in Opposition and Bill to spend time with Hail Mary in retirement used by date on faulty products has expired.
