  1. SPC 1

After this new variant of the National Party and its reset with Luxon, Willis and Bridges.

A walk down memory lane of men of a certain age in leadership, of time past – does anyone remember the golden sunshine of 1969 …when music was made for the Loxene disc

    I woke up in Montecito
I was thinking about my life
And the questions made more questions
    Staring out into the night

Yes, I’ve worn the golden g-string
    Put my hand into hellfire
I did it all to make you love me and to feel alive

Oh, that’s just the world that we’re living in
The old boys hold all the cards
    And they ain’t playing gin
You dare to call me crazy
Have you looked around this place?
    I should walk away
    Oh, I should walk away
    But I think I’ll stay

There are layers to this body
    Primal sex and primal shame
They told me I should cover it
So I went the other way
I was trying to own my power
Still I’m trying to work it out
And at least it gives the paper something they can write about

And oh, that’s just the world that we’re living in
The old boys hold all the cards
    And they ain’t playing gin
And you dare to call me crazy
Have you looked around this place?
    I should walk away
    Oh, I should walk away
    But I think I’ll stay

So the mad man’s in the big chair
And his heart’s an iron vault
He says if you can’t make ends meet, honey
    It must be your fault
We all focus on the winners
And get blinded by their shine
Maybe caring for each other’s just too 1969

But oh, that’s just the world that we’re living in
The old boys hold all the cards
    And they ain’t playing gin
And you dare to call me crazy
Have you looked around this place?
    I should walk away
    Oh, I should walk away
    But I think I’ll stay

    Yeah, I think I’ll stay
    I can’t walk away

    • SPC 1.1

Charles had his investiture as Prince of Wales in 1969, his son Harry lives in Montecito, with the coloured grandchildren.

    • Brigid 1.2

That's a pretty cewl song. And lyrics. I didn't realise she actually had talent.

There was nothing that I listened to in 1969 that was made for the loxene disc awards. NZ pop music was mostly pretty derivative and plain awful.

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes reminds me of that golden summer

      • Dennis Frank 1.2.1

Same. I recall buying her dad's first album for my young daughter. Reckon she must've inherited more than his flair. Perhaps from mother?

Re '69, Quicksilver put out one of the all-time greatest rock hits (that never was). Shady Grove. Nicky Hopkins on the crazy piano (he also did magic for the Stones before he died).

Here in '69? Yeah I agree with you re loads of musical crap here, but don't forget Larry's Rebels came out with I Feel Good that year & it was so hot it was smokin'! Still is, whenever it comes on from the SD card in my Outlander.

      • SPC 1.2.2

Luxon was conceived in 1969 and born in 1970.

1969 Hi-Revving Tongues – Rain And Tears, Saint Paul by Shane The Dedikation Wait For Me Maryanne, The Fourmyula Nature, Simple Image Spinning Spinning Spinning.

        • Brigid 1.2.2.1

          The Fourmyula were good.

But I can't find "What have you done with the day that god gave you". Whose was that?

Waking up late on Sunday to that song, with assignments due the next day but not even yet started.

  2. Barfly 2

A depressing day – just found out my doctor has retired – ten weeks left on my medical certificate ugh – catastrophizing ensues.

    • Corey Humm 2.1

Rough. If you talk to MSD atm they are pretty understanding and will usually keep your payments going while you wait for your new doctor/doctors appointment. Hope you find a good new doctor. It's hard. I've got bipolar and ADHD and my long term doctor retired last year and been seeing doctors who treat me like a criminal every month just for requesting my meds two days early so I don't have to go without them or doctors who think ADHD is made up nonsense or don't understand bipolar and want to put me on different meds. It sucks having to find a doctor that gets you. All the best.

  3. Cricklewood 3

Watch for Luxon to go hard on crime and gangs there's fertile ground withcall the recent violence in Auckland if he can also tie extended lockdowns and the spread of Covid to the gangs and add to that some vote that really disliked Judith and could see the Nats hit 35 pretty quick will just be a case of how much gets trimmed back off Act vs how much they get back from Labour.

    • SPC 3.1

In the first Colmar Brunton poll after Todd Muller took over as National leader, his party rose to 38 per cent support.

    • Anker 3.2

I agree Cricklewood. I believe there will be a significant poll bounce.

    • Coreyhumm 3.3

Absolutely. He'll get mid 30s, most new leaders do, Cunliffe debuted to mid 30s. It's definitely about where it comes from, is it bringing in new votes or just playing musical chairs with the existing anti govt vote.

I think he'll steal some votes off labour but I think labour just has to give nzers a decent summer and labour will go back up to mid 40s.

Long term labour needs to spend these two years delivering on housing, poverty and wins for the poor, young and middle. The saying Oppositions don't win governments lose could be apt if labour gets a term of unprecedented majority government and is seen to have wasted the opportunity. If labour is seen to have seriously delivered especially on housing and rents on top of being the one who "saved us from the worst of COVID" labours got nothing to worry about… If they don't… And don't campaign on anything that excited people. It's their election to lose.

  4. Ad 4

Well done Barbados for ditching the Queen today.

    Republic!

Maybe we'll get there at our bicentennary.

  5. Ad 5

Give the Pentagon another massive budget increase, and they have to go and spend it on military bases in our region.

"In Australia, you'll see new rotational fighter and bomber aircraft deployments, you'll see ground forces training and increased logistics cooperation, and more broadly across the Indo-Pacific, you'll see a range of infrastructure improvements, in Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Australia," Dr Marla Karlin for the Pentagon.

Pentagon to build up US bases in Guam and Australia to meet China challenge – CNNPolitics

Presumably other Pacific nations will get the very heavy knock on their door as well.

    • McFlock 5.1

Nah, the existing bases get the troops, the others in the sphere get soft power. E.g. Stuff today (wee line at the end of the report) suggesting that part of the problem in the Solomons is that US aid funding goes to the most populous island Malaita so the folks there worry that it'll dry up because the Solomons cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan, while the government is building relations with PRC (including a nice stadium and other development projects in the west and on Guadalcanal itself).

Elephants battling, grass being trampled, sort of thing. It's all likely to end in tears, but then the US has been asleep for four years, and for a decade before that was busy elsewhere.

    • RedLogix 5.2

Yes that was my view of what the first concrete outcome of AUKUS would be. Sooner or later NZ is going to have to choose between the US and the CCP.

  6. Stuart Munro 6

Well I'm really glad our government has AGW targets due to kick in for 2050.

But the collapse predicted in 1970, for 2040, is still on the cards – and we haven't taken the mitigation path, largely speaking, but the BAU one.

  7. RedLogix 7

I've just gone through the wettest winter in WA and now back in QLD we're having a very soggy summer.

    Crazy country.

    • Shanreagh 7.1

Perhaps you could be on urgent call to come with your following rainmaking cloud to the parts of NZ that are traditionally affected by summer drought eg North Canterbury, parts of HB etc. When you are called they only want gentle but wetting rain……..my Irish Grandmother was a specialist in types of rain, and after hay making/baleage. smiley
