       If this government make another term then I’d expect Ardern to come into her own at the moment though the trainer wheels are on and Clark /Cullen is running the show.

   I’m not sure if I’d call Wayne Blimp a wedger… instead, hoping to secure patronage, he spins like a flatulent weathervane, turning whichever way he thinks the wind blows and farting in the same direction. You can grant him some situational awareness, seeing that National was running out of friends and trying first to pretend that the Greens could be allies, then hallucinating that one day the Gareth Morgan would come to the rescue. Now he’s trying this, apparently assuming that Jacinda may be handicapped by her wilful and persistent adherence to the female cause, but is at least redeemed by being white enough to suit him (unlike Golriz and Meteria). Plus ça change…

   Of course Ardern is a H1 and H2 puppet, with Winston also in charge. Obvious from the start. Every time Ardern was asked a hard question all we heard about were ‘conversations and committees.’ Lightweight as, Bill sledged her in all the debates, even though he was grilled by the moderators, and she never was. Media bias, much! National, needs to buy its own media outlet, just to even up the deep red MSM.

         Perhaps you should have listened to the guy you voted for a bit more closely. In previous elections, he said he’d deal first with the party that polled highest. He consistently refused to commit to that in the run up to the last election. That was a pretty clear indicator, for people who were paying attention.

         It may also have escaped you that his campaign slogan was “Had enough?” What did you think that was – a promise of more of the same?

         If you wanted a right wing government, you should have voted for one. You didn’t – you voted for a party that has consistently said they’d consider their options and was cast in the role of “king (or queen) maker”.

   Dunno what I’m meant to take from that. Certainly isn’t reassuring.

   This government fudged the 90 days ‘fire at will’ challenge by introducing a useless tribunal, which no-one will ever use.

   So, yeah, I’m not hopeful for this government being even radical enough to be ‘third way.’

   I’d be surprised if Wayne Mapp is surprised Mike.

   NZ Labour might be half way there on the rhetoric. But they immediately fall down when asked to provide the reasoning behind or beneath it. Their spin is liberal and they reject social democratic priorities, as evinced by their undertaking to hold themselves (and more importantly us) to a regime of so-called fiscal “responsibility”.

   Wayne’s right enough to say they merely intend to soften or blunt the edges of liberalism’s impacts. And that’s Third Way – a supposedly ‘nicer’ liberalism.

    There are some of us on the left that are concerned that the Ardern-led government is too MOR and incrementalist – ultimately, that will support more of the neoliberal same, with a softer face.

    I do think Mapp is aware of some of this unease on the left, and IS trying to wedge the left. I suspect his hope is that the government will not slide further to the left, and Mapp’s aim is to stop that in its tracks.

    I tend to agree with Trotter’s response to Mapp on this:

    Trotter says the Ardern-led style of Third-wayism, is a pragmatic response to the narrow political and economic stage that is dominant – and on which progressive governments operate. The danger is that such progressive governments become hostage to the neoliberal dominance.

    However, Trotter also has hopes that the current government will find that the price of succumbing to, or appeasing, soft-neoliberalism is too high, and will then:

    dig deep into the collective experience of the New Zealand labour movement and find there not only the courage to speak socialist words, but also to rally the New Zealand people behind socialist deeds.

    However, I do tend to see both Robertson and Parker as being soft-neoliberals. I don’t know where to place Ardern on the political spectrum. I think that she has been guided by those around her currently, but is not personally committed to a particular left wing position.

        Don’t be so patronising, BM. Jacinda Ardern is a smart, articulate, ethical and committed politician who also happens to be a savvy operator and a good communicator. She’s likeable – so what? Where was your contempt for Key when he minced down the catwalk or read stale “jokes” about NZ on a US late night TV show?

        Why is it that a woman with such good communication skills is being derided with infantilising words like “goofy” and “giggly”? Your misogyny is showing, mate.
