“Wedger” Wayne Mapp in todays’s Spinoff does his best to stuff Jacinda Ardern into a Tony Blair “Third Way”  box. Too glib by far.  True in 2002 Blair did promise to eliminate child poverty by 2020; poverty’s now the highest in 20 years in Britain. I’d back Jacinda to do much better. Besides, instead of Mandy she’s got David Parker.

What distinguishes this government from previous ones is that it is both fully aware of the contradictions of 21st century capitalism and not afraid to expose them publicly. So Mapp quotes Jacinda Ardern:

Capitalism, she said, was a “blatant failure” when it comes to housing. In the same interview, she referred to the fact that “wages are not keeping up with inflation”, and that New Zealand had “the worst homelessness in the developed world”.

David Parker is equally clear:

Labour is a liberal, outward-looking party, he says, but one that also wants to protect the country against “the excesses of globalised capital. That’s in the societal interests of New Zealand, we don’t like those extremes of wealth…so we’re going to be pushing against them.”

Even Peter Mandelson is now rowing back from his earlier statement that the Blair government were ‘intensely relaxed about people getting filthy rich’ in a realisation that neoliberal globalisation beloved of Wayne Mapp has not seen its fruits equally distributed.

Ardern and Parker have already demonstrated that they are both intelligent and capable, applying principled solutions to old conundrums, in the best interest of New Zealand and New Zealanders. I expect that to continue, which is why glib analogies and worn-out labels are so inappropriate.

Expect Wayne to be surprised.

Ardern has Helen Clark’s arm up her rear end.

She’s as Blairite as they come.

“Ardern has Helen Clark’s arm up her rear end.”

Lets assume the truth of that….if you had the chance to redo your life’s work would you make the same decisions with the benefit of hindsight?

    • Still spinning the lies from C/T I see.

Ardern has Helen Clark’s arm up her rear end.

      BULLSHIT AND JELLY BEANS.

Helen Clark is not even in the country. She’s back in the US. Don’t know for how long. She moved on from local politics years ago and has plenty of other fish to fry.

If you and your fellow rwnjs think you can run with that line… you’re in for a big disappointment.

        Via Heather Simpson.

If this government make another term then I’d expect Ardern to come into her own at the moment though the trainer wheels are on and Clark /Cullen is running the show.

Facts are this Labour party was nowhere near ready for government, they seriously need all the help the can get, lucky for them Clark had a bit of free time in her diary.

      • One Anonymous Bloke 1.4.2

It’s the vain hope of the wooden, sweaty and frankly gross cheerleader (BM): that if he can just flail his pom-poms a bit more, screech a little bit louder, and repeat his lines for the ‘nth’ time, they will come true.

Ad nauseam is the only argument National Party dupes can muster. The ill-fitting stained lycra onesie is optional.

        • Kat 1.4.2.1

Tossers like BM (big mouth) are unfortunately too abundant in the Wayne Mapp long drop outback on planet key as their function to pigeon hole gets confusing for them along with aspirations of stool pigeon status only to barely make it as a stool.

        • cleangreen 1.4.2.2

          100% OAB.

BM is another “hollow manwoman” -nothing more.

May be an android or a simple computer program.

As it appears to be simply a boring shallow repeater of itself.

      • Eralc 1.4.3

Helen Clark is constantly putting her oar in. Some in Labour are sick of it. With technology and Ms Simpson, she doesn’t have to be in the country to rock the cradle.

        • Anne 1.4.3.1

You vacuous righties never come up with any evidence because you can’t. You’re just very poor losers who have to make up stories to justify your venom and irrational hatreds.

And you think by adding “some in Labour are sick of it” that people will think you know what you’re talking about.

I’m not sure if I’d call Wayne Blimp a wedger… instead, hoping to secure patronage, he spins like a flatulent weathervane, turning whichever way he thinks the wind blows and farting in the same direction. You can grant him some situational awareness, seeing that National was running out of friends and trying first to pretend that the Greens could be allies, then hallucinating that one day the Gareth Morgan would come to the rescue. Now he’s trying this, apparently assuming that Jacinda may be handicapped by her wilful and persistent adherence to the female cause, but is at least redeemed by being white enough to suit him (unlike Golriz and Meteria). Plus ça change…

  4. red-blooded 4

I note The Herald was quick to report Mr Mapp’s musings.

    Slow news season…

    • rhinocrates 4.1

The epitome of an establishment man. The Herald smells his emissions and declares them fragrant. In the long run a knighthood is all but inevitable.

  5. Ad 5

It can’t be that hard to get Dr Mapp onto the NZTE Board and just shut him up.

  6. Tanz 6

Of course Ardern is a H1 and H2 puppet, with Winston also in charge. Obvious from the start. Every time Ardern was asked a hard question all we heard about were ‘conversations and committees.’ Lightweight as, Bill sledged her in all the debates, even though he was grilled by the moderators, and she never was. Media bias, much! National, needs to buy its own media outlet, just to even up the deep red MSM.

    • One Anonymous Bloke 6.1

So obvious, you voted for Winston 😆

      • Tanz 6.1.1

Got it in one, yes I did. So what. He promised to go with the party who polled highest!! He has lied about everything since, and delivered nothing. However, he won’t be there next time, lol. Even my partner did, oh us trusting souls, lol. Never ever again and we won’t be the only ones. Not one election promise, just baubles of office…again…but I did not vote for a left wing govt.

        • One Anonymous Bloke 6.1.1.1

So when you said it was obvious from the start, you were lying, and projecting your mendacity onto others.

          Thanks for confirming that.

        • red-blooded 6.1.1.2

Perhaps you should have listened to the guy you voted for a bit more closely. In previous elections, he said he’d deal first with the party that polled highest. He consistently refused to commit to that in the run up to the last election. That was a pretty clear indicator, for people who were paying attention.

It may also have escaped you that his campaign slogan was “Had enough?” What did you think that was – a promise of more of the same?

If you wanted a right wing government, you should have voted for one. You didn’t – you voted for a party that has consistently said they’d consider their options and was cast in the role of “king (or queen) maker”.

        • Tricledrown 6.1.1.3

Tanz you are full of it nothing in your comments prior to this post has profiled you as a NZ 1st supporter.

“I’d back Jacinda to do much better. Besides, instead of Mandy she’s got David Parker”

Dunno what I’m meant to take from that. Certainly isn’t reassuring.

This government fudged the 90 days ‘fire at will’ challenge by introducing a useless tribunal, which no-one will ever use.

So, yeah, I’m not hopeful for this government being even radical enough to be ‘third way.’

  8. cleangreen 8

Wayne Mapp made many bad choices and cover-ups also in his checkered time so we don’t need to consider his dribble.

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11823449

We all need to support this new Government to carry out their promises and leave the “capping critics” on the side of the plate and ignore them.

  9. Bill 9

I’d be surprised if Wayne Mapp is surprised Mike.

NZ Labour might be half way there on the rhetoric. But they immediately fall down when asked to provide the reasoning behind or beneath it. Their spin is liberal and they reject social democratic priorities, as evinced by their undertaking to hold themselves (and more importantly us) to a regime of so-called fiscal “responsibility”.

Wayne’s right enough to say they merely intend to soften or blunt the edges of liberalism’s impacts. And that’s Third Way – a supposedly ‘nicer’ liberalism.

  10. Carolyn_Nth 10

There are some of us on the left that are concerned that the Ardern-led government is too MOR and incrementalist – ultimately, that will support more of the neoliberal same, with a softer face.

I do think Mapp is aware of some of this unease on the left, and IS trying to wedge the left. I suspect his hope is that the government will not slide further to the left, and Mapp’s aim is to stop that in its tracks.

I tend to agree with Trotter’s response to Mapp on this:

Trotter says the Ardern-led style of Third-wayism, is a pragmatic response to the narrow political and economic stage that is dominant – and on which progressive governments operate. The danger is that such progressive governments become hostage to the neoliberal dominance.

However, Trotter also has hopes that the current government will find that the price of succumbing to, or appeasing, soft-neoliberalism is too high, and will then:

dig deep into the collective experience of the New Zealand labour movement and find there not only the courage to speak socialist words, but also to rally the New Zealand people behind socialist deeds.

However, I do tend to see both Robertson and Parker as being soft-neoliberals. I don’t know where to place Ardern on the political spectrum. I think that she has been guided by those around her currently, but is not personally committed to a particular left wing position.

    • BM 10.1

      • red-blooded 10.1.1

Don’t be so patronising, BM. Jacinda Ardern is a smart, articulate, ethical and committed politician who also happens to be a savvy operator and a good communicator. She’s likeable – so what? Where was your contempt for Key when he minced down the catwalk or read stale “jokes” about NZ on a US late night TV show?

Why is it that a woman with such good communication skills is being derided with infantilising words like “goofy” and “giggly”? Your misogyny is showing, mate.
