Legitimate calls for inquiries

Key has dismissed calls for an inquiry into the Police’s actions in the Dotcom affair. He says that the Greens call for inquiries every week. In fact, they’ve called for 19 in the past year and a half. Is that too many? Well, the Auditor-General didn’t think so: she responded positively to the Greens’ call for a investigation into Key’s dodgy SkyCity deal.

Here’s a list of the inquiry calls that the Greens have made:

The Dotcom Mansion raid.
Australian shipments of uranium passing through NZ ports.
The price of milk.(successful).
Hydraulic fracturing (successful).
The death of SAS solider Leon Smith in Afghanistan.
SAS prison transfers in Afghanistan.
Charter schools.
South Canterbury Finance affair.
The police case against Urewera Four.
Leak of Ports of Auckland worker’s details.(successful).
Genetic experiments on animals.
ACC claims management.
ACC conflicts of interest.(successful).
The Sky City convention centre negotiations.
Alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka in 2009
The Rena accident and oil spill response.(successful).
NZ’s dependence on imported oil.
Auckland transport on World Cup opening night.(successful).
Huawei’s involvement in ultra-fast broadband.

Seems quite reasonable to me. A number of these calls for inquiries have been followed by inquiries. The Government didn’t agree to all of them, of course, for political reasons.

But if Key wants to whine that people should stop calling for investigations into his government’s fuck-ups, I would argue that the solution is in his hands.

Anybody can ask the IPCA to investigate the .com fiasco. It’s a pity Shonkey thinks he has a say in the matter. My pick is that he doesn’t want an inquiry because he thinks it would reveal he’s been lying about his involvement.

  2. Tom Gould 2

The Chief of Defence Force says “early in the process, we started to see if we could go to Pearl Harbour, but the Americans just reiterated ‘no’, their policy would be there” but Key says “they were never rejected, so they weren’t turned away, they were never going to the military part”. Maybe someone could inquire into who is telling the truth?

    • Tom 2.1

Ah yes, but how does one define truth in this postmodern age ?

Whose version of truth ? Which “truth”? Official “truth” ?

Have a look at what happended during the San Francisco re-build ..

In the rush to rebuild the city, building standards were first made much more stringent, but after about a year, they were in fact lowered, instead of strengthened, “by upwards of 50%” according to historian Robert Hansen. The History Channel International series Mega Disasters attributes the rollback of the strict codes to complaints by contractors under duress from city fathers for the slow rate of reconstruction.[33] In the report, the building codes were taken back off the books in only 13 months, while the official death toll was placed at a mere 379[33]—which estimates raised plenty of eyebrows even at the time, as it was undoubtedly the most photographed disaster then known to mankind, and the damage suggests far more would have been trapped as is backed by anecdotal stories of many being trapped in fallen buildings then consumed by flames.[33] For over forty years now, research by a San Francisco librarian has amassed a death toll well in excess of three thousand, and she has opined the effort will go on for years more.[33] Part of the rush to rebuild was the desire to be ready for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition set to be hosted in 1915, and indeed by that year there was almost no visible damage to be seen in the city. This general disregard for earthquake safety still has effects for the city today, as a majority of buildings now standing in the city were built in the first half of the 20th century to the lax codes. Building standards did not reach even 1906 levels until the 1950s.[33] A detailed analysis of the city today estimates that an earthquake less powerful than the 1906 quake would completely destroy many sections of the city and result in thousands of deaths.[33]

.. and then, of course, there is the philosophical angle which Mr. Key might wish to pursue.

The question of what is a proper basis for deciding how words, symbols, ideas and beliefs may properly be considered true, whether by a single person or an entire society, is dealt with by the five major substantive theories introduced below. Each theory presents perspectives that are widely shared by published scholars.[5][6][7] There also have more recently arisen “deflationary” or “minimalist” theories of truth based on the idea that the application of a term like true to a statement does not assert anything significant about it, for instance, anything about its nature, but that the label truth is a tool of discourse used to express agreement, to emphasize claims, or to form certain types of generalizations.[5][8][9]

Having quite enough of this bullshit from Key.

Between him and Groser at every cabinet meeting, they will see an internal enemy in the form of a cow in every stream every week.

Merrill Lynch Investment bankers(bank Robbers) would you trust this man to run the country.
The banking enquiries that will expose more dirty dealings in the banking system are going to come home to roost for Conmankey.
Barcleys got immunity from prosecution by American authorities by cooperating. Merrill Lynch meanwhile have been up to dirtier tricks, corruption by having evidence destroyed at the SEC.
But as this and other banking scandals emerge the US authorities will be putting senior mangers behind bars.
Dotcon and Shonkey live in the same electorate hopefully the police get their warrants right next time.

    • marsman 4.1

That would be a wonderful XMas present for a lot of people to see Key locked up and all his assets taken off him.

    • Dotty 4.2

Carpetbagger Key does not live in his electorate; he has never spent a night there.

    • jack 4.3

That’s funny… good one! Maybe if Key thought about us the taxpayer more, there wouldn’t be so many investigations. I don’t see how the head of derivatives for Europe Merryl Lynch can be running New Zealand after he help destroy Ireland. Maybe kiwis will start to put 2 and 2 together.

    • mike e 4.4

WE could add Cows who are beaten that are left under nourished left out with no shelter while pregnant over winter to save farmers money.
Workers isolated from society by greedy dairy farmers made to work unreasonable hours with no pay (framers hide behind this by giving workers a salary and then not paying workers for working 70- 80 hour weeks.)
Then other animal neglect is farmers not getting vet help for sick cows to save money.
      Dirty Dairying .
Fonterra and National are making lots of noises but are really covering up the real extend of
similar practices found in the fishing industry.Like safe boats slavery Quota.
National is being very shifty on this only when cornered they do the right thing but have an out clause by delaying action!

  5. Graham 5

What we do need is an inquiry into the domestic electricity rort!

  6. Colonial Viper 6

With the Dotcom affair – simply say that NZ authorities have fallen badly short, and why doesn’t John Key want to know why?

    • freedom 6.1

      http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10817283

but there is a penny in the air and an obvious question accompanies its fall,
How long can John Key hold up his statements re Kim Dotcom?

-i wager about as long as he could hold aloft the man himself,
that is as long as the effects team continue to hide the scaffold supporting the illusion.

      • mike e 6.1.1

If shonKey and his high flying mates were Nigerian scammers the outrage by the media would be baying for blood, but because these scammers are largely the Tory elite we get softly softly instead.
Stephen Joyce gets another corporate handout to TVs Mediaworks his old mates.
The media doesn’t even question it.

  7. indiana 7

Where “sucessful” is noted against an enqiry, does that mean an enquiry was held? If so, what was the net outcome or result of that enquiry?

  8. Graeme 8

It is as hard to believe Key had not heard Dotcoms name untill the police raid, as it is Helen didnt know the car was speeding.
    We deserve better.

    • mike e 8.1

Now we have the NZX in trouble with them and retiring head in legal action and key is trying to prop up NZX with share float.
More deceit and corruption from those in charge.

    • Kotahi Tane Huna 8.2

Yes, not speaking up when the person driving your car commits a traffic offence is exactly the same as ministerial collaboration in illegal search and rendition.

    • mike e 8.3

grey ham she could have called up a military helicopter to get her there on time .Helen Clark’s life was threatened on that day by a former undercover detective living in CHCH so her decision making or that of her diplomatic protection squad may have been influenced.

    • mike e 8.4

she could have call up a military helicopter to get her there on time .Helen Clarks life was threatened on that day by a former undercover detective living in CHCHso her decision making or that of her diplomatic protection squad may have been influenced.

    • Draco T Bastard 8.5

It’s entirely possible to sit in the back of the car working and not know what the speed of the car is. In fact, under those conditions I’d be surprised if the person in the back ever knew what the speed was.

      • Kotahi Tane Huna 8.5.1

Not in right wing nut job land. In right wing nut job land all left wing politicians have perfect recall and are conscious of everything around them, while right-wing politicians can’t remember meeting Lord Ashcroft, or how many shares they own, or whether they have met huge Germans they propose toasts to.

      • Colonial Viper 8.5.2

In fact, under those conditions I’d be surprised if the person in the back ever knew what the speed was.

Yep. That’s what VIP limousines do. High powered, quiet and smooth.

  9. Draco T Bastard 9

But if Key wants to whine that people should stop calling for investigations into his government’s fuck-ups,

Key’s only whinging because he doesn’t want him or his government held to account.

    • felix 9.1

I wonder what he thinks “transparent” actually means?

Just a noise, I guess. A soothing sound followed by a sharp intake of breath.

  10. Graeme 10

Sit in the back of one of those heaps of shit at 170 odd kilometres and hour and try and work……..

But thats a digression not to be made.
Key is not telling the truth about his knowledge of the Dotcom affair, and it such a trivial thing for him to lie about.

  11. ad 11

The Convention Centre investigation from Audit NZ is to me the only one that could really alter the direction of the Government, because it involves the Prime Minsiter personally. Done well it will be as powerful as the investigation into Helen Clark’s painting, but moreso because it is commercial and because he has gone so public on it’s defence.

Key is at the centre of this government, and is the cause if its sustained popularity despite it all. I hope this proves to be the political spear through hs heart.

Hopefully Shearer doesn’t equivocate on this. It’s the one issue I’ve heard he and his team be quite resolute about.

    • McFlock 11.1

I hope this proves to be the political spear through hs heart.

Might I suggest a stake, shaped like a crucifix and wrapped in garlic?

  12. ScottGN 12

You can add another inquiry to the list. The debacle around our preparedness and response to the PSA outbreak. Key is shrugging his shoulders on that one too.

  13. OneTrack 13

What did the Auditor-General say about the other 18 inquiries the Greens asked for?

    • Colonial Viper 13.1

That they were great ideas but needed to be prioritised. And thanks for paying attention to details when other political parties, apart from NZ1, seem to be snoozing.

  14. Murray Olsen 14

Key seems to lie all the time. I’m just hoping he forgets where he is and tells a few demonstrable porkies in parliament.

  15. Blue 15

“Is that too many?” Its one a month. Yes thats too many. It loses its effectiveness to call for an enquiry every time you’r upset about something and they actually cost quite a bit of money. The consequences may be that when one is truly called for and needed, it will be lost in the latest request for an enquiry into the latest paranoiac conspiracy theory. Greens – the Party that cried ‘wolf”.
