Just flicked on TV1 to see what’s happening in the rugby. Host is a man who pushed his partner down the stairs. Kicked her as she lay. Broke her back in 4 places. Cause he’s ‘famous’ he got off with only 300 hours CS & a 10K fine. He bribed her to keep it out of the news. Tells me a lot that TVNZ Radiosport thinks Veitch is an acceptable face of their station and of rugby. Then I switched off. [Fuck, Veitch is on Radiosport. It was Devlin on the TV. My point still applies to Radiosport]

Watch it on Maori TV good old Keith Quinn commentary 🙂

    • millsy 1.1

Keith Quinn was treated like dirt by TVNZ at times, especially towards the end of his career there. His sacking from our public broadcaster was a shitty way to treat a man who is the one of the best rugby commentators in the country. His knowledge of rugby facts and figures added a lot of value to match coverage. Not like those idiots on Sky, ‘Nisbo’, ‘Muzza’ and ‘Smithy’., and Andrew Saville is out of his depth on One.

Maori TV coverage is excellent, and is not ad-saturated like the other networks.

    • Misanthropic Curmudgeon 1.2

It was goo dto see the back of Quinn, and its a shame that MaoriTV recycles his doddery error-prone commentary.

There are far better informed, tacticially astute, technicians of the game who comment from a position of knowledge, as opposed to Quinn’s position of bluster.

  2. TVNZ – proud supporters of racists and wife-beaters

  3. Carol 3

I’ve only watched the RWC on Maori TV. It provides pretty good coverage. Shame on TVNZ!

  4. happynz 4

Just got done with the Wales-Ireland game broadcast on Maori TV and I have to say that I really enjoyed their commentary.

  5. tc 5

Agree MTV have shown what can be done on a small budget with intelligent well chosen talent like Ella, Hastings, Mewes etc….someone take TVNZ out the back and shoot it please, works for me.

I only ever watch it for a special show I want to see…..hardly ever, freeview with SBS via sattelite rocks.

  6. seeker 6

Thanks for the warning Zetetic, was just about to switch on. What is tvnz thinking? At least we can trust Maori TV.

  7. Zetetic 7

just discovered Veitch was back on air with TVNZ only 7 months after he resigned when the story came out.

  8. Luva 8

That is Martin Devlin you fucking moron

    • Colonial Viper 8.1

Didn’t see it myself – but Devlin and Veitch look nothing alike.

Veitch is a slimeball, and to think that media organisations want him fronting shows to the nation again is laughable.

      • Luva 8.1.1

It is still on so everyone tune in for the aftermath studio chat to see who is hosting

    • Zetetic 8.2

      fuck. you’re right.

I know why I got confused. It was listening to radiosport was on in the other room when I turned the TV on. Heard his name. Saw that face. Turned TV to Maori TV.
Anyway. All I say applies to Radiosport

  9. Peter Martin 9

‘That is Martin Devlin you fucking moron’

    *laff*

‘Watch it on Maori TV good old Keith Quinn commentary’

Yeah…who was “the white Jonah Lomu” ?

  10. Luva 10

One or two apologies due right here right now as the world cup song goes

  11. Zetetic 11

just to be clear. Not saying it’s TVNZ’s job to punish Veitch for his actions. But, by employing him as a broadcaster, they’re endorsing what he represents. Backing a basher with the strenght of their brand legitimises what he did. It’s a bad message to Kiwis. And awful message to all the RWC tourists.

    • Colonial Viper 11.1

Perhaps in addition to taking on Veitch again, TVNZ could screen Once Were Warriors to help educate our RWC tourist friends?

      • Luva 11.1.1

Perhaps everyone could get their facts right.

The host of the tvnz coverage is Martin Devlin. He hasn’t beaten his wife ever.

        • Zetetic 11.1.1.1

yup. shame on radiosport though for the message they’re sending.

        • Colonial Viper 11.1.1.2

Yep Luva’s right on I think. TVNZ gets a grudging half point back.

        • tc 11.1.1.3

Nope Devlins wife works for TVNZ, so bashing her isnt a great career move but explains the regular stream of gigs for essentiallly a soccer man. Marty’s more into massaging his massive ego on air at the punters expense, limited range and knowledge as such perfect for TVNZ.

    • millsy 11.2

Veitch should consider himself very lucky he a) still has his freedom, and b) is still in broadcasting.

He must have some very loyal friends. I hope, if nothing else, he doesnt take those friendships for granted.

  12. fender 12

Dont worry theres a guy around who can talk to someone at tvnz about these matters, coro st. is getting sorted, ive asked for cartoons at 6 instead of lazy news. The guy to ask is a part-time dj (talks alot of shit) but he will soon control everything even program schedule.

    • Colonial Viper 12.1

but he will soon control everything even program schedule.

Plus not just the scheduling of the programming, but the script and content as well.

By the looks of it they ain’t too far off from that.

  13. logie97 13

What a delight to listen to the commentaries of Maori Television. No carping know-alls with prejudice and loathing in their commentary.

Well New Zealand, we have been treated to 160 minutes of enthralling rugby and all the talk of a world cup without the New Zealand team would be of no value.

Nah… those Northern Hemisphere teams have turned it on for us.

    • Carol 13.1

Yes 2 exciting matches. The France-England match was very gripping. The commentaries are much better than the usual cringe-fests on other channels.

      • logie97 13.1.1

What would happen if England were to boycott the World Cup?
Who would the rest of the world love to beat?
Who would the New Zealand commentators be able to pour out their vitriol on?

        • happynz 13.1.1.1

What would happen if England were to boycott the World Cup?
Who would the rest of the world love to beat?
Who would the New Zealand commentators be able to pour out their vitriol on?

          Australia of course. 🙂

    • millsy 13.2

Excellent games, the both of them. Very fluid. They all tried to play attacking football. Though the French were slightly ill dicsiplined at times, which threatened to let the English back in.

  14. QoT 14

Alas, Z, I have to put the fact that this post isn’t flooded with give-him-a-second-chance abuse apologism down to your Veitch/Devlin mixup. In a perfect world it would be because everyone agreed with you …

  15. Draco T Bastard 15

Tells me a lot that Radiosport thinks Veitch is an acceptable face of their station and of rugby.

I suspect the broadcaster(s) think it is a celebration of Male Culture.

  16. RedBaron 16

It’s not only Radio Sport legitmising Veitch.
Don’t forget Graham Henry wrote a reference supposedly to help Veitch get his passport back and this was then used as a reference to minimise Veitch’s sentence. Henry, when he was asked about this just said “he didn’t bag the All Blacks when he could have.” and didn’t see anything wrong. Susan Devoy was caught by the same ploy and was very unhappy about it in the media. Good on her.
Henry just belongs to the same old boy network that has funded the Rugby excessively but cut back the Women’s Refuge funding significantly.

Devlin isn’t that great either. Didn’t he have a public row with his spouse over not getting to watch some sport on the TV and then sit on the bonnet of the car so that she couldn’t drive away for which he was arrested. Massive immature kiddy tantrum from someone old enough to know better.

Maori TV , the way it should be.

  17. hoom 17

Regardless of if he was on or not Veitch is a douche.
But more troubling was the blatantly racist ‘oh no maoris have something’ furball when Maori TV won the free to air rights.

Very happily & exclusively watching on Maori TV here.

  18. Richard Down South 18

I wonder if this would be used as a precedent for sentencing now

  19. Deadly_NZ 19

Bugger Rugby Sunday is Bathurst .

  20. Treetop 20

TVNZ probably thought that Veitch would be a good fit for thugby.

See Q & A this morning that Marshall (police commissioner) would not front up with Sharples when it comes to Maori being incarcerated more than non Maori for the same offence. Marshall’s excuse was because of the general election next month. Yeah right!

I reckon Marshall did not want to answer any questions Sharples may put to him regarding the Urewera raids. Collin’s did not also appear and not sure if a reason was given.

Well Marshall aint independent from the government when he starts using the general election as an excuse.

    Police state
A country here the government controls people’s freedom and uses the police to check that people are obeying the rules.

  21. Richard Down South 23

Slightly aside from Veitch himself, anyone else disgusted that it can take MANY years for a court case to go to trial?

  22. randal 24

Devlin is a prissy little piece of nothing isnt he? He couldnt take it when Marc Ellis attached “things” to his nipples on teevee. He squealed like a suckling pig. What the hell TVNZ thought they were doing using him as the face of rugby in New Zealand is beyond me. He has as much backbone as a boiled lettuce sandwhich.

  23. Jenny 25

Veitch is a pillar of the (white) community. That is why he out and about and welcomed in acceptable society.

Now if his skin was a shade darker and his culture was not Euro, and his bank account was smaller, Tony Veitch’s face would still be behind bars in some tiny little concrete or stone cell in Mt Eden or Parry.

    Am I lying?

    Am I exaggerating?

No, the incarceration rate for Maori confirm this fact 100%.
